Ok I got a usdm speedo from a buddy of mine when i changed out his for a jdm one. Then I got to looking at the speedo because he said that it did not work. While looking at the circuit board i noticed that on one of the chips there is a bracket that goes across and the pin on one side was bent and not into the board. I think that when nissan manufactured some of the speedos the pins got bent instead of going through the board. So here is a fix if it happened to yours.

Materials needed:

Soldering ironsolder .015 dia, 1.0 oz.phillips screwdriver (fine tipped)flathead screwdriversmall needle nose pliers

Steps:

First consult your fsm for the correct procedure towards removing the instrument cluster or follow this.

Remove four plastic screws for the door panel runnerRemove three screws for the driver's kick panelRemove five screws panel under driver's side dashRemove six screws for the bottom steering column black plastic pieceRemove two 12mm bolts holding steering column upLower steering column by pushing down on steering wheelPop out headlight switch, hazard switch, rear window defogger switch and disconnect harness from switchesRemove two screws for the instrument cluster bezel then lift the bottom over the two lower tabs on the bottomRemove three screws for the instrument clusterDisconnect the three plugs on the harnessTake instrument cluster outPop the clear/black cover off by pushing the eight tabs over on the sidesDisconnect 6 wire harness from speedo to odometerRemove speedo needle by prying up with a flathead if you can't get off by pulling with your handRemove two screws holding the black face with the mph on itNow LOOK at the ic1 (the black chip with a metal bracket over it with numbers stamped on it)Did nissan put the right side pin through the circuit board or is it bend over on the front of the circuit board?IF yours is bent on the front side then this fix will work as long as your speed sensor and wiring is ok.

Remove four screws on the back side of the speedoPry up on the metal bracket enough to use small pliers and straighten out the pinHeat up the solder spot right of the number R6 and above C14 on the back side of the board When the solder is hot enough then push the pin through the circuit boardTake some small solder and make a good connection from the pin to the point on the board.

Reverse the process to install the parts test drive

Granted I'm an electrician and not an electronics tech so please everyone use this information at your own risk. I'm not guaranting this will fix everyone's speedos out there, This may or may not be a problem with your speedo.

If anyone does not feel comfortable soldering their board then for a small fee I can perform this small fix, just shoot me an pm and we can work something out.

I just wanted to give something back to the 240sx community that has helped me for the last sevens years that I have owned a 240sx.

Thanks and enjoy
