Why is it that when I'm viewing a particular thread and then decide to log in to post, I get an "Invalid Topic" message after I log in? It's annoying and I was wondering if anyone else gets this or if I'm somehow doing something "wrong".

Another gripe...if you're not logged in and you click "reply" or "quote" - it should just take you to a login screen and then return you to where you were when you login. Seems sort of clunky the way it is.

yeah, that happens to me to, when I'm not logged in. It's also annoying that after I post a new message all of the topics are no longer marked as new - so I don't know what I've read and what I haven't.

Does anyone know why we're using such outdated and buggy software here? any chance of a upgrade? Maybe even get PMs? Even be able to subscribe to topics? Oh the possibilities!

From what I understand, PM's will never be enabled on this board. Too many users, too much ground for problems.

The "file attachment" system you see below was also disabled for that very same reason. About a year ago, when it was disabled, the system had some major storage and image loading issues. As soon as it was taken offline and everyone was forced to host their own files, everything was fine.

A lot of BB software is written for MUCH smaller boards. Their codes are not well written to handle massive amounts of communication like here at NICO.

As for the login problem ... that seems to be a bug. It's been here as long as I can remember. It only comes up when I'm at work, because I log off my account each time because this is a shared computer. It's a minor inconvenience, so I make do.

The software on this site was just updated recently. We're running the most current version of Zeroforums.

The log-in problem didn't get fixed with the most recent updates, frankly because we didn't complain to Zeroforums about it. I didn't even realize it was an issue myself, because I also stay logged in all the time. We've put it down on the list for the next time Zeroforums undergoes upgrades.

PM's are disabled on purpose. Zeroforums supports them, but we have them turned off. The main purpose of this is to keep tech questions on the board so other people can see. For those things that are "private," that's what email is for. If a person wants to be contacted, they'll have their email listed in their profile or the thread.

You can subscribe to threads. Click on "Email me all replies to this topic" on the right hand side of the reply box on the reply page. It defaults to being unselected every time to save on bandwidth. However, you can choose to use this if you want.

Thanks for the answers. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't the only one who'd seen that error. I personally don't like to stay logged in 24/7 and I just like to browse logged out and log in only when I post. Just my way of doing it, and it's a very minor "issue" to get over. But at least now I know I'm not (completely) crazy.

actually EV the problems you list are perfect examples of the kind of bugs I was talking about. And since when are PMs trouble? I'm apart of several other boards, some much much bigger than this and they all have a PM system. But whatever, like others the community here is what keeps me around.

If you're interested I'd recommend Invision Power boards (pay) or Simple Machine Forums (free) as alternative software - both have been tested by many large boards and work well.

Thanks for the suggestions on the forum software, but we aren't interested in changing. What we have works great. Also, Zeroforums software was designed specifically for automotive forums. In fact, we are their 3rd largest customer, with VW Vortex and Honda-tech being the 2 largest. Both of which are the 2 of the largest automotive forums period--regardless of manufacturer. So bottom line is, we're happy with what we got. We've had other forum software in the past, and Zeroforums is by far the best. It has a few glitches on some things, but it's benefits outweigh it's downfalls. Plus, the same company that designs the forum software also controls our server, so they know everything about the board, both static and dynamic.
