1. Does the 91 have the reverse lookdown feature found on the 96? where when you put it in reverse, the rear mirrors automatically turn down?
No
2. when I turn off my car, the security light starts blinking, and stays on. THe cryptic service manual talks about it going off after 40 seconds. I dont think its working, but I dont know how to find out. The service manual says that the control unit was behind the glove box, so I took out the glove box assembly to use a voltmeter to test the unit, only to find a maze of stuff I dont know about and nothing that looked like the security control unit thingamajiggy. Is alarm failure a common problem?
Does the light continue to flash or stay on solid? If it's flashing, the system is reading that something is still open. Since I assume that your door lights are going off, it's probably the trunk swithch or hood switch. The control unit is behind the golve box, but above the opening. The bracket that holds the left support string for the glove compartment is held on by the same screw as the theft module. It's mounted facing up, so you only see the bottom of the unit and two screws. The best way to test the system is to lock everything with the driver's window down, trunk and hood closed. Come back in two minutes and unlock the door from inside (not the key) and then open the door. If the lights flash and the horn honks it's working.
3. I am pretty sure that I have at least one bad injector. When I put my palm in the path of the exhaust, it comes out in short bursts. A friend said that this is a sign of a bad injector. Will driving with one or two bad injectors harm my engine? If I only drive distances of ten miles or less?( I am about to get another car, a reliable one that will be used for driving outside town)can a fuel injector cleaner work or is this a problem that has nothing to do with dirt?
A bad injector will ususally show up as a dead miss or "bouncing" feeling at idle and under acceleration. If it hasn't been done lately, an injector flush (pressurized) is a good idea. The exhaust bursts may or may not be anything, never tried it before.
4. How much should I expect to pay at a dealer shop to have my valve cover seals replaced, and to have two replacement keys made?
About $600 for Rocker cover reseal and $25-$35 each for the keys.
5. What size speakers are the front and rear speakers? Can I use any readily available speakers for replacement? How about the bose amps on each speaker? Can I use them on new speakers? Which ones sound good under $100?
Best deal going is to have them rebuilt free at Bose... if you're hearing weird noises it's probably the amps, not the speakers, but they replace both. The 91-92, and maybe 93 model years had recalls for the rear amps. If they haven't been replaced they need to be. Bose will also rebuild the fronts at no charge as a goodwill gesture.
6. My steering is sometimes really soft, and sometimes firm(how I like it) at the same speeds. At first, I thought flooring the accel pedal firmed it up, but it does not seem to be the case.Does anyone know why its doing this?
Could be a bad speed sensor or intermittant electrical connection to the rack. Something is happening between the ECU and the rack to control the speed sensitivity. Any problems with the speedometer?
Here's the big thing... If you're planning on keeping the car, I wouldn't spend $$ on any of these things unless you're going to replace the timing chain guides. If they haven't been replaced already, you're running the risk of a scrambled engine every time you start it. Search this board for info on the guide issue.
Good luck!
