I missed this one due to the chaos called my day job. ;)

Ford introduced the Vertrek concept at the recent NAIAS in Detroit. This gives us a glimpse what the new Ford Escape replacement will look like. No word on when the new model will appear, but it's likely to coincide with the release of next gen Rogue in MY2013.

- Power is said to come from a new EcoBoost 1.6L turbo 4cyl.
- Based on the C platform that underpins the new Focus and C-Max.
- Will also replace the current Ford Kuga: did-ford-copy-the-rogue-t350751.html

Very interesting, I'm not sure how I missed this either, all of the info I saw regarding the Escape seemed to indicate a replacement in 2012 based on the European Kuga.

Regardless of the fine details, this looks to be very good news, in particular due to the advanced powertrain which moves everyone in the right direction - I'm sure this competition indirectly will stimulate a stellar next-generation Rogue. Looking forward to it!

Ford had already indicated it will import the Kuga to NA awhile back... now it seems they are designing the replacement for both the Kuga and Escape and it will be the same vehicle. Ford has a lot riding this. Although the Escape is popular, the design is 10 years old! That's an eternity compared to it's competition.

Speaking of the next gen Rogue...

Keep your eye's peeled this summer as the 2011 Qashqai is at the end of it's 5yr. cycle and due to be redesigned. There is good reason to expect the new 2012 Qashqai will form the basis of the 2013 Rogue just like the last Qashqai did.

It's fun to sit back and watch things unfold, even if you're not in the market for a new vehicle. I think vehicle choices are a bit of a reflection of changing times - look at this Escape concept, a few years ago who would have dreamed of a 1.6 L turbo as the main powerplant on a vehicle of this size....and 6-speed auto transmission's becoming standard equipment? Tradionally the "take rate" for the Escape has been heavily skewed towards the V6, following the conventional wisdom "more cylinders and bigger displacement = better".

Even though the current Escape is an old design, it's always interested me that this has been one of Ford's strongest sellers year after year, and it has dominated the small SUV/CUV category, outselling even perennially strong competitors like the RAV4, CRV and the Rogue too. So even though people seem to prefer the new crossover design features like that of the Rogue, this is by no means a sure-thing for Ford to abandon the Escape's SUV boxy exterior to become like everyone else. The Escape will now be less unique, and may get buried in a sea of small to midsized crossovers which includes a long list from every manufacturer now...however a lot will depend on the spec sheet; with exterior design being equal it will come down to the powertrain numbers which will have to deliver stellar efficiency while not sacrificing performance.....let the battle continue and no matter who wins, the consumer is gauranteed to win!!!!

Some very interesting details here:

http://www.autoblog.com/2011/01/10/ford ... roit-2011/

Ford claims that this vehicle as well as a large proportion of its entire lineup will employ automatic start/stop technology and regenerative braking in non-hybrid vehicles, dramatically increasing fuel efficiency ratings.

It could be argued that the Escape was the vehicle that started the CUV market to begin with. There really wasn't anything quite like it when it debuted. Other models that existed at the time and compete in the segment today do so because they were re-defined to better compete with Escape.

I've driven a number of Escape rental cars over the years and had enough complaints about them to not have it on my final list of CUV candidates when I chose Rogue (limited heat/air flow direction, small gas tank, 4WD, not AWD). But it was still the vehicle that made me a fan of the segment. It's an aged model now and needs to catch up with the pack, but there's no denying its heritage.

Possibly...

But did the 1980 AMC Eagle foreshadow the future? It's possibly the first AWD 'crossover'... a sedan with increased GC and AWD.

That could possibly be the nicest PT Cruiser I have ever seen. :chuckle:

But I still would prefer Nissan over Ford because I really love the idea of Nissan with L-shape lights and I hope all Nissan cars will come in that design. That would be unique to all other manufactures like this Nissan Ellure: Image
unless Hyundai or Kia would steal that design as usually they do.

Both the Honda CR-V (1995) and Toyota RAV4 (1994) were introduced earlier than the Escape (2000).

Nissan had introduced the X-Trail CUV just after the Escape in 2001. Although it was only sold in Canada for 2005-2006 and in Mexico since 2003. It never made it to the USA.

Regardless, the Escape has been one of the top selling CUV's for years. Both in the USA and Canada.

As was the Subaru Forester. But none were as refined as the Escape was, even in 2000. They later evolved that way.

I have just read that there will be a brand new CR-V for next year (2012).

That will be a big competitor for the Rogue and will probably force Nissan to follow with a replacement for the Rogue too.

I just read the article about the upcoming CRV redesign and I was really not impressed. The powertrain is staying the same with the 2.4 engine and the fuel efficiency numbers are identical to the current model, which are less than Rogue especially in city driving.

What they are doing is adding more standard bells and whistles like Bluetooth and changing exterior styling, nothing too earth shattering, I think the Rogue is safe from this competitor. The Escape on the other hand looks to have some serious game-changing plans, including a super efficient next generation powertrain, hopefully with the option of a plug-in hybrid version too (although this has not been specifically mentioned yet to my knowledge).

Yes, Honda is not doing great these last years, no new models, just some refresh, ... and nor always the best ones.
The "new" 2012 Civic is another proof of it.

Since the Vertrek is based on the chassis of the C-max (= new Focus), it should be able to handle the same types of engines, if they want too: 1.6l with turbo (168 Hp), some other gas engines, an conventional Hybrid, an Chevrolet-Volt-type Hybrid, and a full electric.

I have to agree. I've always admired Honda's engineering prowess, but the past several years have seen very little of the innovation they were once known for. If they aren't careful, their complacency could come back to bite them.

Meanwhile Nissan has been continually innovating... CVT transmissions (over 1 million built), Around View Monitor, Lane Departure Warning systems, VVEL (variable valve lift & timing), and now an all electric car with the Leaf.

It's good to be a Nissan owner! :woot:

But people in Europe will never agree with us because they don't have the same Honda that we get over here. Just check their Honda Accord (in US - Acura TSX). It is always been expensive car with quality in Europe. Europeans will get an update a lot earlier than US plus to all of that more engine choices. I did some research and found that their Honda Accord gets the 4WD System which is a Dual Pump System that seems very simple, old, and basic design nothing special but I don't think Nissan will invest 4wd to Altima. Of course raising the price of Altima for another $4k will probably kill the sales because the price will reach G25/G35 then what's the point to buy a Nissan when you can buy Infiniti? So Honda doesn't really doing good for US which I can't say about Europe. Still love my car from day one but never had the same feeling about CR-V.

There aren't many mid-sized AWD sedans in North America. The Ford Fusion, and Subaru Legacy come to mind.

Back to the Vertrek...

The Escape/Tribute are pretty old designs... 11 years with the same basic platform. Many competing models have been through 2 and even 3 redesigns in that time period. Now it appears the basic 2 box shape will disappear in favor of a more rounded design.

Regardless, the new Escape will be stiff competition... especially if it continues it's top selling ways.
