Absolute garbage. I bought a brand new one when I bought my Lincoln exactly 11 months ago. Brand frickin' new. Today, it looks like it's been driven over a couple times. Cracked, with chunks missing. No idea why...never been dropped.
Worst of all, the damn thing keeps popping open. Refuses to stay shut. For a while I had duct tape, electrical tape, and packing tape wrapping the thing. It stretched the duct tape over time and started popping open just enough to disengage the battery.
Fed up with it, I put a new battery in the thing (for as much life as possible) and superglued the POS shut.
It STILL comes apart.
So now I've superglued it, epoxied it, duct-taped it, and electrical taped it. I'm sure it'll be falling apart again my tomorrow afternoon.

I hate this friggin' thing.

Meanwhile my 20 year old Infiniti keyfob hasn't given me a bit of trouble.

You should carve a new fob clamshell out of a nice piece of walnut, hit it with a few coats of laquer, transfer the guts, and start a "fobmod" site selling the directions. Could be a new cottage industry.

That's actually a DAMN good idea. s***, just start your own business selling the things. Customer's send you the core, you transfer everything over, and ship it back.

This company makes key fob wraps:

Not sure if they do Ford/L-M products, but its worth asking.

Ford fobs are actually among my favorites. The buttons are easy to press and they don't have that silly rubberized coating that flakes off. BMW and Lexus integrate into the key, which is nice, but the buttons aren't as easy to push.

Yeah I hate the BMW/Benz keys for some reason. Now Suburu's key fobs are great. My mom has an 09 Forrester (great smal SUV too). Its all plastic, which I dont mind, but has 2 very large buttons. It is still perfect condition with no sign of symbols rubbing off.

MoD, not only is it a complete pos (from Ford no suprise), but how much did that new one cost you? $100 or more I bet... That's stupid. All it is is 2-4 buttons with a tiny curcuit board inside, made of plastic.

The fob for my truck has a broken key ring loop but, it has survived a few dunks in the lake with no problems, and all on the same battery that was in it when I bought the truck in the summer of 2008, I think that you just got a factory dud.

My Subuaru one, though the lettering has rubbed off, is impressive.

When I took it apart I found pretty hefty gaskets on it too, leading me to think Subaru designed the key fobs, much like the Forester, to be for the outdoorsy, on the go lesbian.

I don't disagree there at all. I like the layout, I've never accidentally hit my "panic" button (worst idea ever, by the way), and it isn't a goofy shape like modern GM fobs. If only it would stay assembled I wouldn't have a problem with it.

The keyring loop on it is mind-bogglingly small though. It's so small that only on the tiniest keyrings is it able to move and lie flat. And if you put another keyring on it to allow it to move freely, it sits at 90* to the keys, which is even worse than not lying flat.

Image
They need to either rotate the keyring loop 90* or make the opening a heck of a lot bigger.

Yeah I've seen the little loop break before. My solution for my Q45 was to take the broken fob and use 3M mounting adhesive to tape it to the key itself. BAM! Instant BMW key!

LOL! Now I wish I hadn't thrown that broken fob for the S14 away.

Bought it for $15 on ebay. Still a geniune Ford remote though. When it comes time to replace the batteries next year I'll just buy another for $15.
