Ford engine swap?

You're all going to want to kill me for this, but...my mom's 95 Contour finally died last week, transmission problems. She opted for the 2.5L Zetec V6, which I can honestly say is one of my favorite engines of all time - it's got decent torque, good hp potential, and it sounds soooo much sweeter than a KA when it spins up, much more "revvy" and proper-engine-sounding, not to mention putting out 200hp in SVT stock trim (I'd shoot for at least 300, there's a few turbo kits around). So...has anybody in recorded history tried dropping one into a 240? It seems like the perfect combination, the 240 just screams for a potent little powerplant like that (a retuned truck engine is not "potent"), and it's significantly lighter than the VG30, so the car hopefully won't end up as nose-heavy. I know a custom outpust shaft and engine mounts are gonna be needed, but beyond that, I have no idea what I'm gonna need, especially in terms of electronics. Any input at all would be really helpful, TIA. And before anybody says anything about an SR swap...1. they still dont' sound as sweet as a v6@7000rpm, and 2. the Contour engine is free, so if I can do the tune and swap for less than $5000, I'm coming out ahead of the game.

Gonna be a huge pain and more costly than you think. And as for a " tuned truck engine" not being potent maybe you should hop on over to the KA-T forum and see how potent it can be with that 5 grand you are willing to spend on a 2.5 zetec.

I knew I was going to regret that comment - the KA24 is also one of the best engines I've ever had the pleasure of driving, and I realize that 5 grand in a KA-T will make a monster mill...but it just doesn't "feel" right, to me, in the 240. That chassis just begs for a smaller, higher-revving engine; I'd gladly put an S15 black top in, but I plain love the sound and power characteristics of a V. And no way am I putting a boat anchor in my engine bay...Toyota makes a small V6 too, right? It's no more than an idea I'm tossing around at this point, just looking for some feedback.

V motors are flawed except for 12 cyl; the only advantage is the compact size. Inline 6 and v12 and any boxer motor offer the least vibration. i4 is even much better on the vibration than a v6.

pball anything can be done for enough $$$.

IIRC the Contour is fwd. You'll need a custom bellhousing to mate it to a rwd transmission...a T-5 maybe.

What's the V angle? There isn't a huge amount of room between our strut towers.

You should be able to mate the two electronics, using the engine bay harness/ecu from the Contour & the chassis harness from the 240. Sit down with the respective fsm's & have fun. :)

I think you'd find a KA with 5 grand in it would feel ENTIRELY different from a stock KA anyway, and dropping that thing into a 240 will be a HUGE *****.

you find that crap-*** V6 to be more revvy than even an SR? an SR at full tilt is one of the sweetest sounds i've ever heard next to the I6's of the Supras and Skylines. don't get me wrong, the SVT contour is a decent car in it's own right, but just trying to change that thing over to RWD with a transmission adapter (if the wonderful Ranger trannies don't bolt up) and all of the custom fab work to get it in and running will cost a fortune in not only cash but also downtime.:(

IvoryJ30t - you sound pretty stupid and unknowledgeable. If i where you i would stop posting dumb answers to other peoples posts tell you learn more about cars, and the automotive world as a whole. Might help open up your little closed off mind, to more and sometimes better things.

pball - like others have said it would be one hard swap to perform, it would even be more involved then a 4.6L or 351 or 350 swap would be. the main thing is the fwd to rwd, with having to get a custom bell housing welded to either the stock KA transmission or get like a t5. then you have to worry about wiring. just dosent sound fun to me, or worth it. let me ask you, have you ever heard a built KA with turbo? it sounds pretty nice.

actually a V6 is better than a I4 in that manner.

maybe but the friction co-efficient of a V or boxer is exponentially higher than that of an inline engine, less friction of course means longer engine life and a more efficient engine from less parasitic power loss.

I think you should let me take that SVT motor off your hands so I can use it to swap into my friends contour 4 cyl which is too weak for it's own good

i just have a thing against ford products, and im being an ******* about it. doesnt mean i have no idea what im talking about, as ill challenge that any day. ill get into a technical discussion with you. its just me voicing my opinion about a crappy product that offends you. your just mad because im rubbing it in your face that ford sucks. i love the 7.3 powerstroke, i used to drive one everyday with a 5+1 zf manual transmission in a 17,500 gvwr F-450 chassis. but when it comes down to it, as a CAR manufacturer, ford is an inferior product.

what do you know about driving a truck? think you could handle a international 4900 33,000 gvwr 10 speed w/air brakes?

oh, and after years of towing cars and performing contract roadside assistance for USAC [if you own a ford, and have used roadside assistance, you know that company], i feel im qualified to say that ford products are inferior. ****.

I can see blasting difrent cars, engines, or parts a car company makes, but not the whole company. i mean i really dont care for many cars ford makes either. but they still have the ablity to make a product that is just as good as anyone else. the only ford cars i like are the Linkin LS, mustang, svt focus, and some of there europen cars. there trucks are good but the new F150 is over priced. i have problems with some cars other car companys make, but i feel the big 3 are finaly trying to do something about it. i also understand how a person can own a car and have bad feeling to that company because of that one car, but just the way you went about stating your opinion made you apear dumb, and closed minded.

agreed, my ford has left me on the road once due to a bad radiator hose.

I've had it over a year and put 30k on it. Overall fit and finish of the car is better than a lot of cars I've seen, not the best, but better than about any other domestic. Sure it may be a pain to work on and all that good stuff, but everything said and done I'd rather have it then a good percent of new vehicles.

I think you're giving ford the reputation that Chevy deserves right now.

Ya use a ranger transmission! God I've been driving my ranger for the last week cuz my 240 is down...I remember why I hate the thing. 95k miles...2 syncros gone, usually takes 2-3 tries to get into second...and it's slow and hogs gas

hey wonder, not tryin to offend you, your cool, but it isnt like were talking about a built 351 or a 302 here, its a goddamn contour motor. not all ford products are bad, but have you see the crap the peddle as new cars recently? and dont even get me started on chevy, in many aspects GM is even worse. i was complainig about him wanting to take a perfectly good design [ka] and rip it out, and replace it [while dropping buckets of cash] with some ford junk. BAD IDEA. as a whole, i would never pay money to own a ford or gm product. I have a Dodge w/ 5.9 and i couldnt be happier with it. 2000 Durango SLT w/40k on it. never had a problem. in my servicing of american products the chrysler/jeep familiy was the brand i towed the least. towed the most- Mercedes and Ford!! [specifically, Focus and Exploder, i mean Explorer]

hey, newsflash- dont ever spend money on a focus. if you want to hear it from the guys that deal with them all the time, the focus is the biggest piece of crap out of the ford factory...

ive always had project cars, and that was my first new[er] car. i wanted something that wasnt gonna drop a transmission 3 years into owning it, so after seeing what brands and models broke down the least, it turned out to be chysler trucks [that was surprising enough] got the 2000 last year with 28k on it, has 40k on it now, and the only thing ive had to do to it was changing the oil, and front brakes. couldnt be happier with it. has a 3" catback [sound damn nice] and blows other ford trucks out of the water. there isnt a week that goes by without a 150 or an explorer thinking hes hot ****, and getting shut down...

IvoryJ30t, in all honesty, stop digging your own hole. You dont seem to know as much as you think you do, and you certainly dont know anything about the ford engine in question specifically. It could be a great engine and you wouldnt know the difference since you are bent on bashing fords. Go do some reasearch man, and come back and provide us with actual information instead of opinion. Opinions are like ***holes, everyone has one. Show us some pics and specs on some pistons, rods, and cranks and get back to us. ;)

ok, if its such a great engine, when are you gonna be investing in one?

and yes, i reserve the right to dig myself a hole, thanks.

ps, you have no problem putting your "*******" out on the table, so why should i keep mine to myself?

one of my friends has a 89 notchback mustang with a 94 lightining 351 with a vortech pushing 10 lbs of boost. last time we went to englishtown, it layed an 11.6@126. would i want to go up against it, no. is it currently running? no. blew a headgasket, and spun a bearing. does that make it a piece of crap? not by itself, it just something i wouldnt want to put money into.

so, if your so happy with fords current lineup, when are you picking up yours?

i dont know, i guess i must have missed the memo about the ford zetec motors being best thing next to the RB.

so, let me get this straight. you advocating spending thousand of dollars just to get the motor in the car. not even including the modifications needed to get some decent power out of it. i guess i must have missed the thousands of turbo contours terrorizing the streets of america. i should **** my pants next time i pull up next to one...

and im the retard:rolleyes
