Only way for a truly legal(I asusme you mean road legal) skyline to be in the states if it didn't come through motorex is if it is over 25 years old.

There are ways to get grey market vehicles in (the majority of licensed vehicles) that are descibed in the topics here if you care to read them. However it will always be a grey market vehicle.

Can someone describe exactly what a "grey Market" vehicle is and what one is allowed and not allowed to do with one. Also how easy is it to register/ insure one for 100% daily street driving?

Honestly guys, forget it! People that have them won't tell ya how they got them. They will only try to sell them to you for un-godly prices and tell you that every company you find that says they can get one is illegal, but their method isn't. Motorex was illegal. Why do you think they got shut down. Other then selling cars with the same vin number re-used three or four times they also tried to report cars stolen from them only to have the law enforcement find out about their shady company. Good luck on trying to get one, cause I've given up! They're aren't worth that much headache and $$$$!!!!

Honestly, If I were in the states, I would just do an RB in a 240SX. Even knowing the wonderful feeling of driving a Skyline I wouldn't be able to deal with the BS you guys have to to get one.

check out http://www.fast4wheels.com. their cars are state level legal and are pretty decent when it comes to pricing (you have to keep in mind exactly what you're buying too). Call JJ and tell him Eric with the gunmetal R33 sent ya.

That sight is impressive. I'm having a hard time loading all the picks on the skyline stock page though. Has anyone actually purchased from these guys yet? Also have you been able to title, register and insure them? We need details...

Paul2x:

I have an R32 from RB Motoring, which as you might know was a spin off of Motorex. Totally legal. Anyway, their is another way to get a legalized Skyline: Listen up:

Buy one in Japan, Have the motor, drive train disassembled from the chassis in Japan by a authorized exporter who will give you a "disassembled" certificate. Import the Chassis and Motor/Drive train separately, reassemble, then, and this is only for Cal, be the 1st 500 people into the DMV on the first day of the new year in which the DMV is open and apply for a kit car with all of the above paper work. Then you have a kit car which is legal! A lot of work and some luck but otherwise no dice. The DOT no longer allowed Motorex or any other importer to legalize the Skyline[don't you love the government protecting you from yourself?]and said they would allow the 50+ R32s but no more! Customs look for this car[R32,R33,R34] more than the Porsches!!! Otherwise. find a used G35x, yes I have one of those also, and take it to VRT[VRT.com] and they will install a TT kit from JWT. There is a person who is doing the disassemble act and making kit cars legal without having to be the first 500 at DMV each year. If anyone is interesed, post a reply and I will get the info. Skylines are incredible, right Paul? and worth the effort!

It is all about the paper work. Find the loophole(s) and bring the car in. Through Canada is best, especially if they can "manipulate" the title in such a way as to not call it a skyline or an R32. Call it a 2dr coupe and/or 240SX(-like) in the body type. Don't mention a model type whatsoever. If the Canadian importer can pull this off and produces a Canadian Title without any mention of a skyline, you have a chance to bring it trough. A letter from Nissan North America will help your case, stating that the vehicle in question (Candian VIN blah blah blah) is legal in all of North America like all 240SX models. If the paper work is in order, those people at the border don't give a flying leap. Doing it in parts is doable but make sure you follow the letter of the law (finding and staying within the loophole). If they can prove you were "obsuring the identity of a machine" you go to PYITA prison... Be careful, be smart. Guys, the govt is not made up of the sharpest tacks in town. Be smarter than them and use their crappy import laws against them.... have fun.

Its legal to get them in Aus anyway but to get them even cheaper some people get friends in Japan to buy a couple skylines while there and then import them to aus as their own private vehicles and then sell them to Australian citizens while over here (saves on import duties, emmisions tests etc). I'm thinking this may work in the US but probably not.

He is "ironing out" some details with the DOT, you know, the government that brought you no Health Care, Social Security destructions, the Iraq invasion[$800 billion and counting], high Energy Prices, big Business breaks to screw everybody, so it may take time, but as soon as he pulls the triggger, I will inform the forum.

cant you just swap the vin from a 95-up 240 onto a r33... its legal till you get caught, but who is gonna go and look into it that much, tell the dmv you did a rhd conversion and a front and rear conversion. just drill out the vin in the dash and on the engine bay, and scrape off the one on the door and say you repainted it...

No , it wasn't like that at all. Motorex just tried to use the ignorance of the DOT about Skylines to make claims between models[R32,R33, R34]. They did some real testing, it wasn't all "smoke and mirrors". Why do you think the DOT will let the 150+ Skylines stand?.

May work in Tennessee but not California. The DMV/CHP is really hip to this issue[CAL DMV has cross checks to most vehicles not only CA but the whole US!], since Motorex was based in So. Cal.Hope ypu get away with it: Good luck!!
