Well Just like most of you guys on here I Bought a quest 120amp alternator off Ebay. First I had a problem with it not charging after 10 mins right out of the box. SO I just put it up for a while. I finally took it to my Local alternator repair shop and the guy says it broke a wire on a brush from what looked like factory assembly. No biggi He fixed it. But he says The alternator is NOT 120amp and has internals NO BIGGER THAN A 80AMP. So basically its like buying a stock alternator. Just thought you guys should know before going and wasting ur money.

Are you sure it wasn't just your alternator? There are a lot of places that advertise the Quest alternators as either 110amp or 125amp. I wouldn't think they could do that without it being true.

Drag,

You have been hornswoggled. Factory 94 Quest / Villager _is_ 110a.

If you want I will take some shots of a brand new Quest unit for you.

Mine wasn't 80amp, I can tell you that! One thing people should know though, it's not a mod to try without mechanical knowledge and a welder preferably.

I dunno the reasoning behind it of why its not 120amp. All I know is I bought it advertised as 120amp, It didnt work properly So I had it worked on and the guy who fixed it says I was lied to. So I guess just becareful. Looks like I got the shaft again!!

Won't replacing the stock alternator pulley with a slightly bigger one create a bit more charge at the same rpms?

I've wondered about this for a while, any thoughts on this?

Drag you musta got sniped then on that alt.

After I installed mine my volts went from 12.8's idle to 14.2's idle, and 13.8's to 14's. while running DUAL pumps, DUAL fans, radio, ignition box, and 6 bosch coils, with my lights on.

My belt would ALWAYS sequel with the factory alternator at night with my lights on and fans on. That has never happened with the proper q45.

i agree with everyone here, you have been bricked or lied to...my quest alternator belts out a solid 14.5v from idle to redline regardless of whats on electrically at the time.

Yeah but, it doesn't really matter. The voltage is regulated and isn't what your really after anyway. Amperage is what you need to run all the accessories we do and for that you need to increase the amount of windings in the alternator. This is why the Quest alternator is physically larger than the RB alternators.

I figured I would just cross-post this, since it appeared to be appropriate.

Thats the same alternator I have that they said is a 80amp.

The guy showed me a Book were the alternator had to be Special Wound in order to handle 125amps.

But The alternator is on my car now. SO whether it is or is not 125amps. Its new and maybe it will work a little better.
