This isnt really a fix but rather I would like you to fully look at the problem before you go and give 200+ bucks to fix something that may or may not be broken.

That certainly is one cause of the problem.....unfortunatly they never issued a TSB nor apology for using Sony 10 disc changers which proved highly unreliable and silently replaced by the 6 disc Clarion, which I have had zero issues with {sure do miss having 10 CD`s loaded up though}

The only thing Sony does really well in my book are the XBR series trinitron televisions

The 10 CD-ROM players are not unreliable, but do need to be refurbished every 10 years or so. The reason the Clarion became available is the 10 CD Sony was discontinued.

ERR is an indicated failure to read the disc for whatever reason.

I remember hearing Sony no longer supports the 10 disc changers....no more parts or servicing.

Not sure Joe still stocks the Clarion substitute either { was a smoking deal for less than 150 when I bought it years ago}

Someone here is hopefully enjoying the remaining parts from the ole Sony!!

Clarion is now discontinued. However I found a USA-SPEC brand 6 cd changer a plug & play unit for the 96Q. I did have to re-fab the mount but no biggie. A better option may be an IPOD.

My Sony 10-disc changer is still working great at 204,000 and 12 years.

It's a little touchy about CD surface quality though, as is most older CD technology.

Cold weather definitely affects my 10 disc Sony changer. When the car warms up I get less errors. I am actually going to burn a CD at the slowest speed possible to see if that makes a difference and also try 2 different brands of media.

What for mat do they have to be on the CD? If you could give me a step by step explanation that would be great.

I'm having a similar issue with the 6-CD Bose changer in my MDX. The dealer wanted $600 to fix it and recommended just trying to find another unit elsewhere to replace it.

It's intermittent. If the CD decided to play at all, you'd better thank your lucky stars and don't even thinking about switching the disc to another one.
