You have to remove the rubber "elbow" connecting to the throttle body first, as the car ages, it gets very stiff and there is a real chance of it ripping. After i ripped mine, i looked everywhere and could not find it, so now, as a reference to people who google this predicement etc, i know another member who has the same problem too.

it is called the "air duct", this is for the 3.3 VG engine

part# 16578-0w001

The older QX4 3.3 does not need the air duct removed. Loosen the connections, remove the air filter top housing and leave it attached, shove the conduit nearest the throttle body down place a rag under the throat of the throttle body and spray, wipe up, brush, spray again, and then reassemble the whole of the duct work.

Taking these plastic type conduits out make for the damage you describe. Age does make them brittle, the very reason I leave them close to their original position.

i think he means leave the duct attached to the main intake assembly, so disconnect the filter box top, the vacuum hoses, then just disconnect the duct from the throttle body, this minimizes the flex it will have to endure.

i got this from everythingnissan.com for $58 in total which i bit the bullet to buy, hey, beats the 70 something from infiniti dealerships and 60 something from nissan dealerships. It shipped today so when it comes, i finally can drive my qx again :D the hose technique hose did not work :( because the duct has a specific angle and its not 45 or 90 degrees.

Can't thank you enough for locating that part number and sharing it. You helped save me mucho dinero $$$.

I have a 97 PF with over 300K on it. But it was running like a champ up until a few weeks ago. I had a few intermittent sputters (nothing serious) but with so many miles on the vehicle it was an ominous sign. Then last week it started sputtering HARD once the engine warmed up or you rev'ed the engine past 3K RPM. I have been religious with the maintenance on this car. Have had all my belts, plugs, oil changes done like clockwork. Lot's of people had all sorts of ideas ... anything from the timing belt, ignition module, fuel pump, blown head gasket ... you name it. One guy, who turned out to be right on, said it sounded like a vacuum leak and to check all the hoses. Well my dad and I poured over the engine and sure enough a crack had developed in the air duct. To test this theory we threw some duct-tape over the crack and tried to seal it as best we could. Guess what ... no sputtering ... not at idle, not at 3K RPM ... not even close to redline.

None of the local parts stores even knew what to call the part I needed, let alone give me a part number to look it up. Thanks to this forum I am back on the road and hoping (fingers crossed) to at least pass 350K ... in this much beloved vehicle.

I may have spoke too soon ... but thanks anyway for the part number. It helped me eliminate one possibility. I'm going to post a question on the main forum with all the specs.
