I didn't read this whole thread but I saw alot of confusion less than half way through..

Sealed box is for when you have minimum space.Ported box is louder when you have ample space.

What sound card do you have? It may be that the onboard sound card just isn't strong enough, or the addon card you're using isn't strong enough.

MA-Audio sells some external sound cards that also offer a 48V phantom power. These will also allow you to plug a Mic into it to use TrueRTA
I am using the integrated soundcard. I thought about switching it from 2chan out to 4 chan out. (It gives me the option of doing up to 6chan out). I could then have quadraphonic stereo sending identical signals to the front and rear channels. I might be able to bridge the two right and left channels together, doubling my output voltage to give me a 3db increase. To do that I'd need to buy another 1/8" stereo plug and revamp my cable that took forever to build. In other words, spend 3 bucks and another hour of work while watching a movie.

One of my friends mentioned getting a different sound card with optical outputs since my EQ/preamp has optical inputs. It's not a bad idea but I'd rather not spend that money right now.

As for the phantom 48v, my EQ has that built in. All I need to do is buy a mic and build a longer cable.

Does the preamp somehow talk to the computer? If not then you can't use TrueRTA

Depending on the answer to the first question you could get a mid range Audigy for ~$70.

If the preamp doesn't talk back to the computer then you'd to spend the $120 on the external M-Audio unit with the 48v power.

Trust me, the second option will end up being priceless if you really do plan on making subs and speakers.

It wouldn't be able to talk to the computer to my knowledge. It does have it's own 61band RTA and 31band EQ so I wouldn't need TrueRTA.

I think there was an addition issue, but for the most part I don't think any issues with confusion were not addressed. Sealed is usually -3db from a ported enclosure at like power. The only issue I have with ported enclosures is you have a higher chance of a noob trashing a sub by overpowering. Sealed is much safer in that aspect. "Ample space" requirements for a ported vs. sealed box is dependant on the sub. I know the JL 12w6v2 only requires an additional .25cf (plus port requirement) of volume which can easily be made up via polyfill or some box tweaking.
