Ok, this is just getting stupid!

If you all recall, when i went to wash my car one time, the car locked itself with the keys in the igntion; not supposed to happen anyway you look at it, but I can accept an accident, fluke or something like that..

So, thursday night it did it again! Same scenario (washed the car waiting for AAA to come). AS SOON as I closed the door it locked itself.....

None of the local locksmiths that we've tried will make a copy... One guy thats been in the business for 30 years said he never has seen a key like the Qkey. So no spare key!

And it did it AGAIN tonight, fortunately I had the keys with me so it didnt matter as I would have locked it...

nevertheless, this is a pile of BS, a $50,000 car doesnt lock itself spontaneously..

The funny thing is, with the keys in and the door open it will lock (by pressing the button) and unlock itself all day! It even locked itself ONCE and unlocked itself..

There has to be some sort of explination for this????

mine does exactly what yours does. i always make sure the keys are in my hand or the window is open. sometimes if i hit the unlock button on the key fob twice it will unlock all the doors and then lock them again, also.

go to the dealer for an extra key, sure it costs a fortune but at least you'll have an extra.

I can empathize.

My $20K (U.S) '01 VW Golf GLS does the same thing................Dealer says its normal?????What the f---? I just carry around a second set of keys (those stupid VW jack-knife keys that only the dealer can produce.........3 months left before I turn it to VW(I'm counting the days).

You can buy a key blank for about $10. Once you have the blank, you should be able to find someone to cut it. http://www.jaggraveyard.com/infiniti.htm

Tell me whose fault it is that you don't have the 2 master and 2 valet keys that came with the car..........plus the cut code id tags.

Buyer beware.

Everytime we call a locksmith for lost key customer, they have the blanks and drive right up and open the doors in 2-3 minutes [heck I can do it in less than 5] open the trunk electricallly pull the lock and make a key from the lock in about an hour.

It isn't cheap like $150-$200. Their van has the special cutting head.

The guy with 30 years better go back to school for some retraining.

I have those. They came in some "authentic infiniti" black case.

If I were to call a locksmith, what would I ask for... Every place Ive called said they can make keys for the Q45, and then when they see the key they're usually like "ive never seen a key like that"

Only OEM keys are steel. Call or email McLock. He can cut them from your blank, but I think he only can supply brass blanks. __________________Brian1995 Q45 & Q45t & 2000 Q45

To fix the actual problem, I think there's a door lock timer or switch that goes bad in the later models. Call Joe for advice - he's mentioned a fix before. The J30 seems to have this problem more frequently.

If I remember correctly McLock Locksmith can make the key with a photocopy... you still need the spare key either way.

I am surprised that the folks near you are unable to make duplicates of the Infiniti keys!

All the local mall key places can do it around here! Admittedly, they have cheap plastic "grips", but they work fine! I had to do this with the lease-return Q45 I bought back in 1998, cause the previous owner lost one valet and one door key. So I made spares and an extra for my wife to use.

Another option you might try - my local dealership can duplicate them on site for $25-35 with aftermarket parts... not sure if yours will or not.

I will say the local guy that did it for me, had one guy that specialized in cutting "this type of key" and it took a couple of trips as I missed him the first time. I went to a REAL locksmith not some WalMart/Home Depot/Lowe's and they were able to help me. Look for a place that sells safe's and such, they should have the talent & tools.

Brian - what should be the "concern" of having a key made of something other that steel? I only use mine as a back-up/spare, but would like to know.

Most likely for durability. Ive TRIED to bend, break and stuff like that to my key, and IT WONT!

It makes a very nice weapon to throw at people.. :D

I remember reading a post by Dennis that the keys literally outlast the locks!

Lock wear. Softer metals will wear off the key and gum-up the locks.

Ok, so as a "don't get locked out" spare, there wear rate should/would be so low it shouldn't be a problem, agree?

True, a hard brass is probably safe, but aluminum is not! Best to use the OEM key for everyday.

I believe the OEM keys are titanium.

This does sound like the J30 door lock timer gremlin. Makes sense that Nissan would use the same unit for both models.

A cheap fix would also be to buy an extra remote and keep it somewhere safe (not in the car) for $20 or so off of ebay. Just make sure it's got a fresh battery and check to make sure it works once a month or so.

From my experience, an OEM remote will not unlock a running car, nor pop the trunk.

My 94 Q did the same thing, the solution is new door lock actuators,I changed the two front ones and the problem is gone. I think there was a factory tsb on it. they are 65 each from infiniti/scottsdale.

I will look into that, maybe if we EVER GET A PARTS CAR I will get the locks from them

IMO its not that big of a deal, the easy solution is to a) take the keys out of the car, or b) If leaving the keys in , leave the windows open..

Which reminds me I gotta go get the keys out of my Q right now!!!!!!
