For the past month I've been trying to find a power FC within my price range (for an RB25) and I finally bought one from Yahoo Japan auctions, but it doesn't come with the Commander. What do you guys recommend I do, buy a commander or the FC Datalogit package?

you're kind of asking about 2 totally different things here. they each have their own benefits. its not really like the datalogit completely replaces the hand controller.

true, the datalogit can do everything the hand controller can, but are you going to have a laptop connected to your car every time you turn it on?

the datalogit is for tuning and is about $350-400. if you don't plan on doing tuning yourself, save your money and take your car to a shop that can do it.

the hand commander can make rough adjustments on the fly, and is very useful as a peak/hold gauge for all your basic sensors.

I recommend doing both.

Get the hand controller first and then the datalogit. Like gawdzilla said, it is so convenient to have 1, 2, 3, or 8 different engine gauges on a screen at a time. I ususally just keep knock, boost, water temp, and ign timing on for the hell of it. Datalogit is what you need to do a real tune yourself though. You really don't want to use the hand controller to go through each cell and modify the fuel maps because it would take you hours vs. having it on a laptop and it taking 15 minutes.

Just keep saving man.

^^^^what he said. Or just do what I did and put a CarPC in your car w/touchscreen. lol. Never have to worry about draging a laptop around with you...its already in your car!

Ok, I didn't want to invest money in the commander just to turn around and spend more on the datalogit. I was thinking that the datalogit would perform the same basic funtionality as the hand controller, and as the hand controller is an optional accessory to run the FC I figured I could kill two birds with one stone by skipping the commander and going straight for the datalogit.

however, I've found a commander for a reasonable price so I will definately purchase it, and as Darius said...just keep saving.

get both if you tune. the datalogit is the only way to go if you tune a few PFC's.

The hand controller was NEVER designed to tune it was used to touch up and monitor.

The datalogit unlocks about 200% more tuning parameters than the handcontroller.

i have been tuning PFC's for about 8 yrs now and the datalogit was my best investment.

i only got the commander. i will not ever attempt tuning. my tuner has the datalogit, obviously. so in my case, there is no reason for me to spend money on it.

get the datalogit setup from apexi its only $290 retail and you hook up your laptop to it and makes tuning way easier, it would take me over 16 hours to fully tune my rb26 with only the hand commander cause you cant veiw all the cells you need to veiw while tuning.

The hand controller is impossible to tune an entire table with (unless you have 20hrs to spend on the dyno). The problem is that there is no map tracing on the fuel and ignition tables.. you have to guess what load cell you are in. The tables have rpm on one axis and map voltage in mV on the other. The only thing the hand controller is good for is monitoring engine parameters or "street tuning" portions of the maps.

Depending on your version.... I think either some, or all have been discontinued from the group in New Zealand that made the Datalogit.

Not sure though, gotta research that.

All of the model specific ones have been discontinued AND REPLACED with the Type-X version....it will work with any Power FC for any car.
