bad starters normally start working if you bang them. the solenoid is part of the starter motor unit so it don't matter if it is the solenoid or starter.
there is a small wire(black/yellow) going to solenoid. decouple the connector that is about a foot from solenoid and connect solenoid directly to postive terminal of battery. if the starter/solenoid is working , it will start.you can also measure the voltage at the connector when you turn ignition to start. put one probe in connector and other probe on chasis (ground). you should get 12 volts. this means your inhibitor relay and wiring is ok up to starter.
mine went on my 91 240sx, and than a couple months later a thief destroyed the second one. they are easy to install but somehow i had a 9 tooth one and the new one is 8. the 9 tooth one did not mesh right. i bought the 9 tooth one at canadian tire.
the second time, i had it done by mechanic. they charge 55 for labour and 255 for parts. you should be able to buy starter for about 150. they are expensive. mechanics gross up the cost.(canadian dollars) ( you should also measure the voltage of the big wire going to solenoid. this should read 12V plus all the time. it is coming straight from battery. measure from ground. the starter need two sources of 12v+ t0 work. )
