Remember how a lot of people used to call the Q45 the "Japanese Buick"?

Well, they were WAY off.

...but I found the Japanese Buick. Feast your eyes on this miracle of geriatric transportation:

Dear Christ, is that a fabric top Avalon? I honestly don't know what to say in this situation.

I've been saying this for years. And years.

The Avalon was PURPOSE BUILT to be a geriatricmobile. Its design goal was to compete with large V6 front-drivers from American brands in the early 90s. The first generation actually had a bench seat and column shifter because that's the audience Toyota was aiming for.

The ROFL-worthy thing is, while 99% of Avalons I see are geezer-driven, the other 1% are owned by younger males who seem to think they're performance cars. I've seen blacked-out Avalons with blacked-out badging and sporty wheel/tire packages and the whole "I spent money on making my car look fast" thing going on. I DON'T GET IT. And the next person to defend the Avalon as a performance car by citing power numbers is going to get hit. DeVilles make 300+hp but they're not sporty in any sense of the word.

1st gen Avalons were actually decent-looking--because they look like Mazdas and not Toyotas. 2nd gens are terrible, and third-gens are worse. But the latest facelift for the third-gen is terrible. Toyota gave it their current "Duplo" look that's becoming standard across the lineup. It's a bizarre combination of sharp facets and rounded corners that reminds me of the last-gen rental-fodder Chevy Malibu.

Black folk in the south like to put the 'ol rag top on everything. I wish I had pictures of all of the various cars I've seen that on. I've seen it on Camry's, Kia's, 300's, a lot of various cars. Black people are funny.

I've seen a few Avalons with Landau tops in the past.

If you're looking for the ride of a cadillac without the depreciation and poor build quality, the Avalon is a great car!

Its like my eyes are feasting on maggot-infested rotting meat!

Its still a popular trend in middle America. The worst application of the simcon top I've seen was on a Ford Tempo.

Is the landau top an aftermarket option in the USA or a factory option? The last landau top vehicle sold up here was the '89 Chrysler Fifth Avenue. Landau tops don't weather well in the cold and break down fast with he liberal use of road salt during the winter months in these parts.

Dealers are more than happy to install them for foolish people who ask for them.

Kinda like gold packages.

I actually think I hate gold packages more than landau tops.
