Dennis, I know you don't usually go into the Nissan forums since your an Infiniti man so I'll leave you this message here.

Does T3 have a Consult II? I was wondering if they had one and would be willing to advance the timing on my Spec V to +2 from -1.

Thanks!

No Consult II as yet waitng for the new Federal Law to kick as we as a non dealer have been excluded from software updates.

Around $2500 for the Consult I but you must acquire plug in cards with softwear for the appropriate car/models ......Actives are special cards.

The nissan data network downloads updates to a computer at dealer which can then be transfered to Consult II so you must be on network to fully utilize all Consult II functions which is not CURRENTLY possible for independents.

Generic OBD2 scanners can read many of the non proprietary NISSAN codes after 1995 models but cannot do any of the old Consult I tests.

This unavailability of diagnostic data and equipment is forcing more and more shops out of business...........new Federal laws are addressing the problem but buying $20,000 worth of equipment PER BRAND serviced will put some out fast.

The major problem is training: the old school techs have a very very hard time keeping up as you need a few years of electronic engineering to understand whats going on...........otherwise they spend the whole day swaping modules instead of an hour or two testing.

At present all air bag and advanced traction after 2000 units must be sent to dealer for diagnostics.Hopefully by the time the 2002 get out of warranty we'll have what we need...........we expect a big repair market in the G35/Z350 since sales have been so good [30,000] but that is 4 years away.

Members must understand how easy 90-95 models are compared to later years.........night and day difference!

More complex, yes, but doesn't the widespread availability of OBD2 software and scanners more than compensate? I thought OBD2 was a legal standard for all significant sensor data, not just codes. I can see that more training and knowledge are required to know what to do with the data, but getting it should be easier, shouldn't it?

The ability to view OBDII is fairly easy. Most generic scan tools can view nearly all the data. The difference is in changing the data. Jeff wants his timing advanced, not just viewed. In order to do that, you must have the proprietary Consult II.

OBDI vehicles have software from other scan tool companies to read and change data. OBDII is a standard, however, the ability to modify the data is not. Only viewing it.

This is to make sure that only dealers can change the algorithms as to how the data is interpreted which can easiy blow up the engine..........leaner than normal or more advanced timing do this every time.

Primarily to download new modified ecu programs if factory finds errors or decides to make improvements.

The new Federal law does not allow independents to make changes to oem programs especially since emissions could be changed............we maybe given access on cars with over 100,000 miles in the future but they want us to be responsible for any car we modify [probably only fair but the $20,000 fine will raise the cost of reprogramming].

Not much use or much to be gained as the tighter control has reduced the safety factor [in the quest for more magazine HP]....those days of geting 10% more with a simple chip are gone.

I never thought I would walk into a dealership and say, "My car needs a software patch download."

They will (occasionally), but you'll have to hit the "Start" button when you want to shut them down.

All this talk of chips makes me hungry for performance. I am just curious if anyone has experience or opinions on UNICHIPS or EMERALD chips. Click here for their site. These allow you to use your laptop PC to optimize each engine. Since they piggyback over stock, just unplugging it returns the vehicle to OEM specs. Maybe this was discussed eariler but being a neophyte I was just curious. :bowdown

I haven't fitted one yet, but everyone I've spoken to about these chips, has nothing but praise.

My cousin was telling me about a tuner who was waxing lyrical about this certain computer which did these amazing things, & when I got him to find out what brand it was, it was the Unichip.

The only drawback is that only the dealer can adjust it.

I think AGM put one on his Q before he supercharged it. I'll try & find out.

Has anyone else had dealings with this product?

Chally,

The unichip if fairly cost effective, as far as Lap top programmable piggyback chips go.

I am firmly of the opinion that by far the best way to tune a car is on a Dyno with a computer.

I believe it top be far superior to any fixed point upgrade.

Obviously, the Unichip is only as good as you tuner.

The fuel ran really rich (particullarly at the top end) when I fitted the headers.

I am on holiday at the moment, so from memory, the headers and unichip gave me another 90HP at the wheels. I don't expect many peple to beleive me as this is about the same as the JWT nitrous kit. I will send the Dyno sheet to Chally who will be able to verify my claims.

Chally, make sure you are present when the car is being tuned on the Dyno, so that it can be set at how you want it, not the tuner/dealer.

Being present also ensures quality control ect.

For the ultimate in laptop tuning go for a motec
