i recently installed an RB20det into a 90 240sx. from what i gathered, the tach wont work regardless of the resistor trick (correct me if im wrong). anyway, basically everything worked except for the tach. and if you guys get that far, instead of sending your cluster into LS auto, go to your nearest junkyard and either buy a gauge cluster for a maxima, or just dissasemble one and take the tach unit. it reinstalls very easily, just unscrew the tach unit from behind the gauge face, and rescrew into stock 240 cluster. works perfectly without a resistor, all it will need is slight calibration due to the fact that you need to remove your tach needle from the stock tach unit and reinstall into the maxima tach unit. this is save you tons of money, and all that shipping time!!

i can do a write up if anyone wants, but this is pretty untechnical so let me know.

If you don't want to pay LS then you sould just source out a GTS-t Gauge Cluster, you can find them on eBay occasionally. And play with the wiring. Plenty of ppl on here have gotten the R32/R33 Gauges to work perfect!

but those gauge clusters can run up to $300.00. a maxima tach unit costs max $20.

i bought a maxima cluster a few weeks ago from a junkyard and tried to switch the tach units, but there's no way they'll line up with all of the electronic guts in the KA cluster. how the hell do you do it? got a more detailed writeup with pics maybe? anything would be greatly appreciated!

hey, just off the bat (cause i havent yet created a write up). did you open up your cluster for the KA yet? if so have you taken out the tach and compared it with the maxima tach unit? they should look identical, only the maxima is obviously configured for 6 cylinder. if they are not identical tach units (circuit board et al), then maybe the maxima cluster you bought is too new. i bought a mid 90s cluster. let me know.

hmm.. i know they should be the same (because a friend of mine has a maxima tach. in his S13 with an RB25), but i compared the 2 and it doesn't look like it'll work.

i bought a cluster that looks like this...http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...ZWDVW

i'm wondering if maybe i needed to pull more off of each tach and switch smaller pieces around? i'm just confused about the whole idea. i'll try to take pics of both clusters tonight and post 'em up so you can see if it's the same as yours or not. thanks for the quick response by the way

you need to remove the tach unit from whatever plastic or clear casing is around it. you should be holding basically a small white cylinder attached to a circuit board. thats it. if there is still a gauge face or that clear plastic on it, unscrew the two top screws and remove that. then replace the unit onto your stock KA cluster.
