Chmercer we already went over that previously in the thread, Actually I came up with the plexiglass idea on page one. And after afew comments, I sat and thought about and 1) If your able to heat the plexi with a heatgun, what will a 55watt halogen do if its on for hours, 2)I agree yes it would be cheaper but whens the last time you tried molding plexi with a heatgun and making an exact form fitting lens, remember the plexi/clear plastic comes in sheets and getting the corners and sides right would be next to impossible, not saying it couldn't be done but they would have a very high possibility of leaking and look pretty ghetto.
The only true way of producing quality lenses is using vaccume molding and injection, male/female style die pressing, or possibly casting. I did a quick search on Plastic Injection Molding Machines. Here's a cheaper one since I'm on a budget 1991 Nissei Plastic Injection Molding Machine (FH860S420BSE)
1991 Nissei FH860S420BSE Plastic Injection Molding Machine. $49,999.00 or best offer! In compliance with UCC regulations, this unit must be sold in commercially reasonable manner to the highest bidder.
Currently I do not have the 49k+ to own, store, and operate this machine, if I did I'd be popping plastic parts out of that badboy left and right. Also I'm not even sure if the machine will do clear plastics or not. I know we don't want black non transparent lenses:)
I'm not trying to sound outrageous or sarcastic, I'm simply stating that to produce lenses and plastic products in a professional quality you have to have the proper machinery. The Zenki lenses are a semi rare item to find, so intern that means there probaly isn't many being made, compared to lenses for civics, and integras. The molds well at least common male/female die molds can run upwards of 5-8k per set(my father runs a tool and die company and provided me with the average price just for the records). The company has to up the price on lesser production lenses due to the fact they are having to pay for these machines, the raw materials, the molds, and the employees to run it all. Also remember they have to pay for health insurance, keeping they're factories up to Safety specs, paying utilities and the list goes on.
Another small tidbit of info Nissan dealers sell the OEM headlights at around 250 without shipping per side, not including corners. And I'm sure the Nissan Automobile Factories produced thousands upon thousands of headlights(making the prices drastically cheaper) ,whereas these clear lenses are produced to a very limited market of 240sx enthusiast so obviously there price per item would be higher.
I'm sorry about my excessive wrambling but I'm trying to prove a point that the price of these even though it is alil high is not extravagant compared to producing them yourself. BTW i have a heatgun and afew small sheets of 1/8inch plexi in my garage, if you want I'll show you how difficult it is to make quality bends with limited tools.
Anyway I'll be quiet, just needed to vent alil steam in a calm and informative fashion, Hope everyone enjoyed:)Thank you guys (Tangy and 240sxed) for backing me up, I promise I won't let anyone down. And I'm spent...........
