I was looking at jfanaselle's tutorial for the fog lights, and i think that looks really good. Unfortunately, i don't have an SL... i have an S, meaning, no stock wireing.... How would i got about wireing the foglights to be on with the headlights? ive seen text descriptions, but i don't understand it all, i have an idea, but not a clear picture, if someone has a couple extra mins, is there any way you could make a diagram with how i would do it? and maybe a picture or 2? I realy would like to do this, but just need some help.

THanks, Cole

Well the best way to do wire it up is to run a seperate switch for it. Check out clipsed's original tutorial on fog light installation here: http://www.nicoclub.com/articles.php?id=262175

If you want to wire it to the headlights so that they come on every time your headlights are on, then you need to connect a relay between the headlamp wiring and the fog lamps. I found this pic on the web:

The "power from ignition switch" will actually be power from the headlamp wire. You can just tap into the positive wire from either headlamp (you don't need both of them), but just make sure it's the positive one and not the negative. Then, the relay needs to be grounded, which is the part that says to ground. The part that says "to horn, etc." will be the positive power for the fog lamps, and then the last wire runs directly to the battery with a fuse on it.

If you choose to hook it up with a seperate switch, then just tap power from the fuse panel inside the car, hook a switch up to it and then run it to the part of the relay where you would have hooked up the power from the headlight wire. This is a standard relay which can be purchased at any auto parts store for about $10. If you have any more questions, let me know!

wow. thank you. that really helps. now... would i just find a place to put the relay under the hood? if so, should it be kinda near the lights (away from the engine). and also, being the technical person i am, what exactly does a relay do? like why couldnt i just wire the power right to the headlights wire?

Yes you want to use a SPST (which stands for Single Pole, Single Throw) relay. You can mount it anywhere you'd like, but I'd suggest mounting it right to the top of your fuse panel under the hood or somewhere else that it won't be exposed to too much moisutre. Mounting it close to the fogs isn't necessary, and would probably expose it to harsher conditions. Just be sure that you use a decent gauge of wiring from the battery positve terminal to the relay and from the relay to the fog lamps themselves. I would suggest at least 16 gauge, but 14 would probably be safer. As far as how it works; a relay is kind of like a remotely located switch. It turns on or off the power between the power source (the battery) and the accessory (the fog lamps) when it detects voltage to one of it's terminals. Basically, it'll see the voltage either from the headlamps or from the switch that you install, and it'll open the circuit from the battery to the fog lamps. It's designed for using an existing circuit for switching (like having the fog lamps come on when your headlamps turn on) but not actually drawing power from that circuit, because the wiring for your headlamps is only good enough for the headlamps themselves, not addational lighting. Here is a good website to read too: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relay
