The fog light mod thread reminded me of a post I had been putting off.

Anyone have a spare passenger side lense for an 01 Y33 they would be will to part with on the cheap? My wife must have picked up so road debris or something. No paint damage around it, just cracked glass. The dealer wanted something like $230 for it and unfortunely, that is not in the budget for a non-vital part right now.

I am planning on putting up some pics of the Q in the next few days. Nothing special, bone stock, but she is still my girl.

Used lenses tend to be pitted and scratched, if you can even find one.

The wise armor new ones from Joe (and the other front illumination) with

Or you can get custom. I'm about to install my 3rd set in the Maxima. Why they changed over to glass I will never understand.

I'll be installing a 1/4" lexan cover to keep it from happening again.

Glass is harder and resists scratching a little better than lexan, but both need armoring.

Used the stand-off lexan headlight protectors on another car, and the 3M is so much better in terms of performance and appearance.

I'd rather deal with polishing Lexan to clear off rock marks than replacing $160 lights It only takes me a half hour to cut and shape new covers for the fogs so it's all good anyway.

From what others and I have seen with the glass lenses, simply putting 3M on them won't stop them from eventually cracking. The H3 bulbs heat the glass up and sudden/repetative cooling via water will cause them to crack (at least with the '02-03 Maxima fogs). This process is sped up if you have upgraded your bulbs for higher output. Once cracked, it is far easier for road rocks to actually break a piece off.

One can use Barkeeper's Friend or Bon Ami on glass.

Never have seen that problem on an Infiniti with H3 bulbs.

The proximity of the bulb (heat source) and the glass could play a part in that, as the Q bulbs seem to sit "far back".

Once hardened glass has been (deeply) scratched or crakced, it has lost all it's hardening properties and subsequent cracks/breaks will happen easily.

I look at the them as "wear parts" and simply acknowledge they will need to be repalced eventually.

Okay... wheres the lexan link??? If it a perfect fit or do i have to do some work to it to make it fit. Platic or glass.. i kinda dont care as long as the price is right... Really, i stay in houston, rocks fly everywhere.!!!! so i dont think glass is goot, although it may look better.......

i went to ur link Maxnix...(invisiblemask.com) seems as if they sell the films or something.. they dont sell the whole fog assembly itself. I saw 49.99$... and i know thats wrong... If they sell it that cheap, ill buy 4.

That is correct. Call Joe for the lamp.

Never had an armored one brak on me. And the only thing that wars is the armor. Much less expensive to replace.

I'm in process of making my own. I have a sheet of 1/4" lexan sitting in my garage (minus two holes where I cut my covers out). I have some sanding left to do at this point. I don't think any aftermarket companies make anything like it.

The Maxima fogs def get hot to the touch and I have seen steam come from them when they get wet. At least they have been that way with the PIAA Ion Crystal H3 bulbs (55w-85w).

Wiring and lamp unit designed for 55W H3.

Hotter bulb with greater current draw may require heavier gauge wire, but still not cure overheating the glass lens.

Going to be even hotter if sealed behind lexan. If not, dirt will coat the lens. Why I discontinued using the rigid lexan headlight protectors.

55w-85w = 55w bulb with brightness of a 85w bulb. Now, upgrading to a higher wattage bulb WILL require wiring changes.

I'm installing HIDs in my fogs which will run cooler. The lexan lenses will be sealed to the fogs so there will be no issues with dirt.

Questions.. how does this look on the G50.. it seems like the G50 may ned some cutting in order to put that light inside of the Q. Next.. how much money does it cost to do such a thing...And finally if i like it and its not that time consuming and not that much money into it... would u recreate it for me for a small fee??

I have a Maxima. I don't have a Q. There is no retrofit.

If you are tired of cracking lenses, you can try the 3M stuff Brian was talking about (a lot of people use it). If you want to do a cover, you can do it yourself with some lexan and a jigsaw (using a metal-cutting blade). The cover can be sealed somehow to the fog lense or you can ring it with velcro (industrial style) strips for removal and cleanup.

I'm only going with a sealed approach because I am upgrading to HID which runs cooler than H3. If I were staying with H3 I would go the removable approach.
