Hi - Just got my 2007 M35. Very, very nice so far. The dealer I got it from (not an Infiniti dealer) gave me one complete key set ("casing") and a key without the "casing". He said the key without the "casing" had the "chip" in it and all I needed was the "casing". Can I just buy the "casing" and insert the key without having to do any aditional programming? Thanks so much for any help with this,

FWIW, even if it did work, I doubt you can get the case just by itself ... if this dealer says it can be done, ask them to get it for you and see what happens.

Thanks for the information. I'm getting the feeling additional programming is necessary. I can buy an entire FOB, key and all on eBay for $19.00. I know that won't work in my car but I was thinking I could take the key out of that one, put my key in it and have the dealer program it. I don't know if that would work either though. Just trying to keep the expenses down a bit. Thanks again,

Probably, unfortunately.

Yes, that would/should work, BUT you will need to find a friendly Infiniti dealer - they charge for the programming and are not always helpful on the price to do this. Particularly, if you did not buy the car from them in the first place.

When programming, make sure to have all the fobs with you ... they need to be programmed at the same time apparently.

I thought the "casing" is where the programming is applied? Not the key? The key itself is a regular normal key used to get into your car (Am I wrong?). The M has only one keyhole on the driver's side door for entry. whenever I valet my car I give the valet my Keyfob (ONLY) & keep the key ring part.

You're exactly right - the dealer (not an Infiniti dealer) was wrong. Not the first thing he's been wrong about Good thing I got a good price on the car. Thanks for the information,

If you buy a fob, make sure it has the same FCC ID numbers inside as those of the fob that already works on your machine. Of course you will need both fobs as they will both be reprogrammed. I paid $40 US to a Nissan dealer to reprogram mine about a year ago.

Correct. The fob is where the chip for programming is located - the metal key is simply that: a key to open the door/trunk/glove-compartment in case of an emergency.

BTW, I got confused by what you meant by "case". I mistakenly assumed the dealer had given you the innards of the fob for some reason (broken case?) - dummy me - and that you needed the plastic case to put it all in. Sorry about that!

Now that I see the other posts, clearly what you got was what we call the "key fob" with one metal key in it, plus an additional metal key without a fob. The fob is a radio transmitter/receiver and contains the electronics that interface with the car electronics.

The metal key does NOT contain any chip whatsoever - it is just a key literally - and the transmitter, electronics, batteries, etc., are all in the fob.

As mentioned above, as long as what you get has the correct FCC id inside, then it can be programmed by the Infiniti dealer ... for a fee.

Thanks again. Is the FCC ID the long alphanumeric identifier in the FOB that I can see after removing the key? Now, after these kind posts, I see that the FOB is what I needed all along and that the key is just that - a key.

Hi again - Thanks for the advice. Do I have to find a FOB with exactly the same FCC ID as the one I have? The reason I ask is the only FOB that came with the car has a FCC ID of CWTWBU735 which, according to the Internet is the FCC ID for Nissan Maximas. Tthe FOB I have has an Infiniti emblem on it but the only ones I can find have the NISSAN name on them. Would one of those be OK?Thanks in advance for any help...

If your new FOB ID number matches your old FOB (marked whatever) and the old FOB works, I "believe" as long as they are the same ID number, the new one should work. I mean regardless of Nissan or Infiniti labels, I would believe the same FCC number would mean the same frequency set et al; I "believe."

I do "believe" you need the same FCC ID numbers, I do "believe."
