anyone else with 90-96 Q notice moderately poor radio reception? I just got a '95 last week and the stations don't come in nearly as good as they did in my old Honda.

Before I bought a new antenna I wanted to make sure this wasn't a normal condition for these stereos.

Any ideas for boosting the signal?

If the antenna isnt FULLY extended, it wont get good reception...... I get good reception in my Q, and I just replaced the power antenna....... 23 from joe, and its a really easy job.......

I get as good, if not better reception in my Q than in any other car ive been in........

Also, if the antenna isnt screwed in all the way, that will make a difference......

Based on my listening the Q system seems excellant in weak reception of FM signals . There are 2 antennae [the rod] and the built in in the rear glass.

Tested the system about 7 years ago it needed 12 uv for 30 db quieting and 19 uv for 50 db quieting..

Find a friend at a commercial two way radio repair shop they can connect a precision signal generator to the antenna and measure it in 5 minutes.

Wes,

The antenna assembly is only 23? Really? Wow! I'm calling Joe on Monday. How hard was it to install? I'm sure it's in the manual, I just haven't looked for it yet. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Nick

Nick,I promise you wont have any trouble...... I thought about doing a write up, but once I got in it was soo easy no one could mess this up......

Anyway, heres how you do it.....

1. Take out the old antenna mast (if you can get it partially out, but the belt isnt broken, cut it), and take off the chrome do-whicky that the screw on thing threads into......2. Take out the right hand side (passenger) liner out......3. Unplug- the 3 connectors going to the antenna motor assy.... Theres a big one that goes into a silver box, a little one, and a black round one.... that one you have to pull on pretty hard......4. Unplug the drain hose..... Dont unplug it from the motor assy, but rather from that junction.......5. There are 2 bolts holding it in place.... Loosen those, and there is a bolt holding 2 ground wires, undo that also......6. The motor should slide right out.....7. Get a really tiny socket (dont remember the size off hand), and unscew it...... 8. Take off the black part..... The gasket is probably really sticky, so it will take a little to get loose.... Then you will have to maniplulate it with the hose to get it off...... I didnt even try to take the hose off...... There is a white, plastic looking disc in there, that is free so you can take that out to make removal easier......9. Dig around with a probe of somesort to get ALL (and I mean ALL, or you will have to repeast everything) of the old belt.... Mine was in like 4 chunks...... There is a metal looking gasket thing in there, that can be lifted out to reveal more belt....10. Lubricate everything really good, and then re-assemble and replace in the order you took it out.......11. When you are ready to put the mast in, have someone get in the car, and turn on the radio...... When the motor stops, put the mast in (fully extended) with the teeth facing toward the front of the car....... It may take a few tries, but once the motor catches it, it should go right down, and then just button it up and your done!!!

It may sound a little confusing, but I did all this in about 45mins......

Keep in mind that the plastic shaft may not be broken on your antenna mast. Remove the retaining nut on antenna, turn on the radio to eject the assembly, and compare the length of the plastic feeder strap. If they're the same length, don't take the antenna assembly apart! Just feed in the new antenna mast while someone turns the radio off so the motor will draw in the new mast. The $23 is just for the mast - antenna assembly is about $150 if I rememer correctly.

I use a pair of needle nose pliers to remove the retaining nut, inserting the tips of the pliers into the holes.

Yeah, i figured you meant that the mast was bad, not the whole motor thing...... I just replaced the mast......
