K, I'm not new to this board or to swapping clutches...I've done mine before. But now I've got 2 (thats right 2~!) S13 Fastbacks and 1 has a Spec Stage1 and the other has a dying clutch. I didnt have to resurface the flywheel for the SPEC, but I'm sure I'll have to resurface the next one. My question is, how the heck do you remove the flywheel? I've had my shot at it, but everytime I torqued the bolts, the flywheel would turn. I know I have to stop it somehow, but how??? I tried stuffing the belts with a towel, TRUST ME, that's not how its done. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks~!

Sorry, I'm not rich enough to afford an impact gun. I do, however, have a great breaker bar....HAHAHAHHAH LOL ;P

I used a big pry bar CAREFULLY in the the ring teeth while a second person leaned on the bolts with a big breaker bar. The pry bar was braced by a pin in the bell housing. So long as the pry bar doesn't slip and gouge the teeth it should be OK.

I put one of the pressure plate bolts on and put a 2x4 underneath it and turned the flywheel, as it turned it wedges against the 2x4 and stops the flywheel. This worked great. You will have to do the same thing, opposite side to tighten the bolts.

Also putting a 19mm wrench on a flywheel and turning it until the wrench jams against the exhaust is another way I did it, too bad it only works with 5 bolts because you can't do this when you only have one bolt left.

Also maybe if you had someone else put a wrench on the crank bolt at the other side of the engine and hold it or let it wedge against the ground or something that would work and hold the flywheel in place.

I've heard of people jamming their jack against the flywheel teeth to hold it, although I might not do this, could damage the wheel.

Any of these methods should work.

Air tool sets run only 80 or 90 dollars at Sams Club ;-) Not the best quality, but none of the tools have broken on me yet.

do what incasemyheart first said. there are pegs for the pressure plate on the flywheel (3 in all). you can use whatever object you choose (you can get creative) and just wedge it between the peg and the ground, 2x4's, jack handles, should work!!!!

you will need a large breaker bar for the bolts, they are probably slightly rusty + 112 ft/lbs torque :(

i suggest against putting something in the teeth, everytime i tried that the object i wedged in there would fall out, or the engine would start to lift and rotate onto it.... it sux.

Snap-on part @A1441 flywheel turner is what I would use. $70 bucks on the web site, but you could probably find one @sears for cheaper.

For a cheap flywheel resurface, use an orbital sander - One of those that uses a 5" round pad and vibrates quickly.

Use 100-120 grit, and keet it moving..cover each area the same amount of time. Because it's orbital, it will leave non-directional grooves on the surface.

You can leave the flywheel on the car and give the clutch a fresh surface to grab.

Just my .02

Thanks All~! These are all coo ideas, sorry Brian - I dont really trust myself with the resurfacing job. I'm not too keen on how evenly I put things on or sand them off.....Thanks again EVERYONE~!(You too Brain~!)

Yeah go professional unless you are in the middle of nowhere and don't have access. Mine was $40 since it is a 2 step flywheel with pegs.
