my starter grinds once every 10 or so times that I try to start the car. I rock the car a little and then the starter can engage and the car starts right up. I'm assuming that my fly wheel is missing some teeth - I've read that this is a common problem with the J30. Does anyone have any idea how difficult it is to replace the fly wheel and how much a mechanic would charge? Thanks for your help.

Welcome to NICO!!!

The flywheel is a lot of work labor wise. While your changing it, I would replace the starter too (no use paying twice for the labor).

Try on of the forums sponsors on the right navigation. You will get an OEM Nissan part at less $$$ than your local Nissan/Infiniti dealer.

I assume you have a 4sp auto, since there is only a handfull of 5sp in the whole country. What you have, is call a flexplate, they are not that expensive compare to the flywheel on a 5sp, what would kill you is the labor, replacing the flexplate mean pulling the transmission, plan to spend about at least $1000.

Get wire welder with gas and remove the starter. rotate the flywheel so the worn teeth show through the starter hole. Weld on some new metal on the worn spots. File as neccessary. Did this once in a pinch, took about two hours with filing.
