i need some flywheel bolts right away. it would take me about 3 weeks to get a set of arp bolts. what i wanted to know is if i can use 8.8 grade bolts from the hardware. looking to produce hopefully around 4 to 500hp so i want to know if guys think that these bolts are safe to that level or if i should just wait until i can get a set of arp bolts. thanks in advance.

do NOT use hardware store grade 8.8's. that is asking for trouble on half that power level. ARPS, or even some used stock bolts off a forum member, or how bout some brand new bolts from the dealership?

IIRC, the stock bolts have a "shoulder" on them that help locate the flywheel and keep it from shifting back and forth. Not 100% sure on that though. Regardless, the flywheel isn't something I'd rush on. At least not if you like your feet attached to your body.

Call ARP and tell them you need flywheel bolts for your CA18, and that Ford Pinto flywheel bolts work, and that you need 8 of them (rather than only 6, which the Pinto kit has) and they'll send you exactly what you need. That's what I did and they shipped all the way to North Alabama within a week. If you're out of the country, then it will be worth the extra wait, especially with the big HP numbers you're intending to make.

well called my local nissan dealer, they didn't have for the ca18 but they had for the ga16 and they have the same thread. i would like to install the engine in the car this week coming as i'm off from work only this week. so unless i can get 3 to 4 day shipping to the caribbean i'll have to purchase the ones from the dealer. cost 7.50 usd a piece equivalent.

Did you double check length? That's why you can't use the FWD CA18DE ones. They're too short IIRC.

I'd, measure the thickness of the flywheel and the depth of the threads in the crank. The bolt needs to be as long as the thickness of the flywheel, plus about half of the threads in the crank.

Yeah I had 2 order 2 sets of Pinto ARP flywheel bolts from ARP, and got 2 day delivery. Not sure if the deliver to the Carib. though. Trust me it's well worth it to buy them and do it right, rather then have them be too short or shear!!!!

FWD CA18DE doesn't work? FAST part #'s say they should... at least for '89 year. The '90 part does not supersede the '89 part, so perhaps something else changed? However a quick check shows that the flywheel, clutch and pressure plate did not change between years (though there were superseding parts for those parts, they were interchangeable).

Part code 12315-55M00 for 89 model year (R)S13:

Code: Select all

JDM parts: (many, here's a few)
	S13	8805-8904	CA18D.F5 + CA18DT.F5
	RS13	8903-8904	CA18DT.MT
	KN13	8610- CA16D.MT
US parts:
	B15U	0100-0801	QG18DE.MT
	B15U	0801-0702	QG18DE.MT
	B15U	0702- QG18DE.MT
	KN13	0986-0887	CA16D.MT
	KN13	0887-0989	CA18D.MT
Part code 12315-D4000 for 90 model year (R)S13:

Code: Select all

(no US parts available)
JDM parts:
	S13	8904-9101	CA18D.F5 + CA18DT.F5
	RS13	8904-9101	CA18DT.MT
	T12	8904- CA18DT.MT
	T12Y	8904- CA18DT.MT
	U11	8509-8709	CA18DT.MT
	U12	8904- 4WD.CA18D.MT +CA18DT.MT
Seems so strange that they should not interchange accordingly...

The last time I tried to get flywheel bolts, I went to Nissan and ordered them for an '89 Pulsar and I'm pretty sure they were too short. This was about 7 years ago though, so my memory could be failing me.

It's possible they gave you some for an E16 or GA16?

Maybe? I see what you're saying in FAST though. They should work.

Next time I'm in a junk yard and see a Pulsar (ha ha!) and remember (HA HA HA) I'll try to pull some bolts if I can get to them for comparison. Assuming its the right engine ... :P
