Is this really what the future is or just another prototype that will mean nothing in 3 years?

Flying cars will NEVER be a practical reality. Even if we could somehow make ultra-high-tech hovercars, there are still are sorts of problems that go along with average people flying above civilized areas. Failure of a roadgoing automobile means a roadside stop or a collision with other cars. Failure of a flying car might mean a landing not-gently in someone's bedroom. And that's without considering the ineptitude of the pilot, which takes things to a whole new level of disastrous.

Even if they were only $20k apiece, easy to fly, safe to land, and cheap to operate, they still wouldn't end up in every garage. Just too many problems.

^ Thats a sad truth. Still, people that think of making billions rather than thinking of disasters will try and make this real in the next 20 years. Sounds fun but your right, its way too impractical. I see at as more of an upgraded hang glider.
