Fluke stuff is definitely quality and will work great. I have an old 8000 series that has been working fine for probably 15 years. A cheapie may or may not work as well depending on what you are using it for. Most likely the fluke will last you a lot longer and be a tool that you'll always have.

Don't get a Fluke unless you leave it in a safe. Fluke's are the best multimeter out there and they get stolen all the time. I've had 3, 2 of which were stolen. The 3rd now sits in a locked cabinet in my garage.

There are great multimeters for under $40 that will serve your needs just fine. My only advice is to buy one above $20 and never from RadioShack. Try OSH, they have a good selection.

Did you buy the thermocouple adapter too?

I recently picked up one of those ir temperature sensors at CDOC for $30. It's pocket sized and reads much quicker than a thermocoulple would. If your looking to read temps that's probably the way to go.

I don't remember where I got my cheapie, but it has temp readings on it, but it doesn't read as fast as my fluke does. My fluke can find a ground fault or short that is sporadic fairly easily. My cheapie cannot.
