I'm taking a 45 miles journey to the next town over(quite bigger than mine) ot find all the fluids i need like redline wetter water, mobil1 atf, mobil1 gl5, and valv synpower brakefluid.

first question... how do i change rear differential fluid, and do i even have to change it. or do i even have it on my car(im not a big car expert as stated elsewhere)

second- how much brakefluid do i need? and how much ATF for poewrsteering? how much brake fluid do i need? the capacities aren't listed for these in the service manual. so im clueless. thanks

Yes you need to change the differential fluid. Remove the plugs at the bottom and top left sides of the unit... the top one is the fill port, and the bottom is the drain. I always try to get the top off first, since if you take the bottom off and the top is stuck, you've got a real problem. You'll need more than the book says, since the oil is hard to get out of the bottle and you'll be crushing it to get as much out as possible. I think I usually buy three. Check your owner's manual for capacities. Anyway, you just drain it and then refill up to the bottom of the top hole.

If by chance you don't have your owner's manual go to http://www.nissan-techinfo.com and look up the 96Q...(page 9-16) same for this purpose.

A liter of brake fluid is enough unless the existing fluid is brown/black. Never leave brake fluid open to air for more than a few minutes.

i do have the service manual. but it doesnt have anything listed for power steering or brake fluid.

and i just looked at the brake fluid and it was brownish. so... unless i get a response before i leave... im just gonna buy either 2 or 3 liters.

At least 4 qts. if you do the simple Snap-On flush. If you do the high pressure hook-up because the fluid is brown or darker, probably at least 6 qts. You don't want to have too little.

"it doesnt have anything listed for power steering "....Strange on page [92 service manual] ST-90 it list capacity as 1.2 liters non HICAS and 2.2 liters with HICAS.My 90 manual [page MA-9] lists the same amounts.

On ST-83 in 1994 Service manual. Fluid quantities for power steering and brakes not listed on MA-7. DOT3 specified at BR-116, but not quantity.

maybe the 94 manuals are different cause i havent found it yet. but i could justb e blind too.

ok.. so heres how it went. i dug around for 2 hours in 5 different shops before one finally told be about a mobil oil store somewhere around. so i went there and picked up 12 bottles of ATF(cause from what i gathered 11.125qts are needed), was gonna get some for power steering, but im kinda poor still, so it could wait since i didnt want to spend another 15-20 dollars. While there i asked if they had Mobil1 GL-5 for rear diff. and they thought about it and said no. then one of the guys walked over to a shelf and look and pointed me to Mobil1 SynGear Lube 75W90 and showed me that it said something about meeting and surpasssing the abilities of GL-5(yes, it actually mentioned the GL-5), so i bought 2 bottles of that.still couldnt find valvoline synpower brake fluid or any waterwetter. but i picked up some GM Orange Dexcool yesterday to. Also I have all the oil i need. So im ready to sit down this weekend change what i can and replace a fuel pump.

hey rob, the mobil 1 75w90 is the same i used for my diff. redline water wetter i found at pep boys. for the power steering, i bought a simple syphon from an auto parts store, and sucked everything out of the reseviour, then refilled with mobil 1 atf. do this once a week until you go through at least 2 quarts of atf, reasonably sure most of the old is out. since i owe you for my new rims, let me know if theres a product you can't find, maybe we could work something out in me getting it into your hands!! jeff
