I replaced the alternator on my '77 280Z and noticed that since the replacement, my volts occasionally fluctuate between 12V and about 14V on idle at 800 RPM. I bumped the idle up to 1000 RPM for the time being, but now, whenever I get open the throttle, the voltmeter pegs at 16V. Any ideas?

Yes, I have a FSM, but it's awfully vague about the alternator. In fact, it actually doesn't cover replacing it (probably since it's so straightforward), but instead REBUILDING it.

Please advise!

Thanks,

Brad

fluctuating from 12 to 14 is normal, pagging 16v on rev with no load can be ok too, but if it hits and holds 16v then you have a voltage regulator issue, it's located on the lower to middle inner fender on the passanger side, forward of the strut tower near the alternator, it's an easy part to replace, 2 bolts and one plug and your done
