After an evening of fairly normal driving (not "spirited", stopped a few places), I was getting ready to park my car when I started getting a really rough idle.

I had put the clutch in and was slowly cruising to a stop when I noticed the problem. I stopped the car, put it in neutral and noticed that my idle was bobbing between ~500-1000 RPMs.

As the car was doing this, it was shaking violently but rhythmically. I shut the car off and let it cool down for about an hour.

When I returned, I took three or four tries to get the car to start, but once it did the car idled fine.

***So, does this sound like an IACV issue? I'm going to try to take the IACV and clean it as much as I can with carb cleaner.

If not that, could it be EGR related? I thought maybe vacuum leak, but that wouldn't just go away.

I didn't throw any CEL's, and the engine seemed fine while driving. The issue was only when idling.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

could be a bad MAFS connection, check the harness connecting to the unit, make sure its tight and clean. And that no water got on it. (if it was raining...)

MAFS is located right after the airbox on the intake, it is aluminum (as opposed to the black plastic like the rest of the intake). It has a harness going to it which uses a little metal clip to hold it on. Use a small screw driver to pop it off.

Thanks, good call. I jiggled the connection to the MAFS while I was having the idle problem, but no luck. I'll take a closer look at it this weekend, as well. I'm also gonna pick up a new O2 sensor from Autozone (it's about time, anyway).

I'll remove the wiring going to the MAFS and hit it with some contact cleaner if it looks bad.

I'm also going to change my distributor cap, rotor, plugs and wires...it's time for a tune-up anyway.

Update: Haven't had any problems with the idle since the original post, other than it being a bit rough.

I've got an O2 sensor that I'm gonna put in this weekend, but I do have one other possibly related issue.

I've been noticing a slight hesitation between 2000-2500 RPM. It's not like the clutch slipping, the car just kind of stops for a moment before continuing to accelerate.

Everything else appears to be fine. I've got some timing chain noise, which I'm going to (hopefully) address by replacing a tensioner, and I'm going to replace O2 sensor, rotor, cap, plugs, wires, etc. as part of a tune-up.

Any thoughts on the original idle issue and the hesitation?

I haven't checked the TPS yet, but the filter is fairly new. I'll probably slap a Z32 filter in there just for the hell of it, but I doubt it'll make a difference.

Good luck with your car, BTW. With all the knowledgeable folks around here, I'm sure someone will help both of us out. :)
