this is my second thread on a different topic. i've been reading the forum for a few years now and usually found answers, but now i need to ask some advice.

recently my 95 j30 was broken into and the stereo and heating control head were ripped out of the car. i have replaced the control head but the floor shifter will not engage unless i tug on the brass rod coming out of the shifter leading to the black cable secured by a white nylon grommet. when i move the brass rod forward with one hand i can depress the gear shift button with the right and the shifter engages. it appears all the wires from the harness leading to the nylong sockets on the right side of the shifter are intact. when i depress the brake pedal i can hear a click inside the floor shifter. my question: is there a wire that was cut that i haven't identified that somehow activates the cable inside the floor shifter? i don't want to replace the radio and secure the bezel in the dash until i've solved this problem, and i am really beginning to miss music in the car! thanks in advance for any help you may provide.

Recently had a similar problem on my F150, not being able to get it out of Park. It was one broken wire under the dash connected to the Neutral Safety switch.

Things are wired up requiring that brake pedal be depressed to get the car out of Park and into gear, so it sounds like a connection between the clicking switch or relay that you hear when you step on the brake pedal and the shift lock mechanism has been cut.

My 240Z was broken into once (in a locked garage) and a barely working AM/FM Radio/Cassette unit was stolen. They cut both choke cables, several heater control unit wires/cables, twisted off the power antenna, bent the upper door frame. Sorry to hear about your loss.

"when i depress the brake pedal i can hear a click inside the floor shifter."

Sounds like the brake switch is getting the Signal to the lock out solenoid ??

Maybe looking at the clicking solenoid and seeing if its moving all the linkage to the shifter ??

i will check that tomorrow yoda, thank you for your input. i am still wondering if i am missing a wire that was inadvertently cut by the vandals, but i see 6 wires...2 for the light bulb, two for a black solenoid under the P, and two for the white nylon object in the rear under the 1 (first gear). there appear to be 6 wires from the harness so...this is stumping me... i even bought an old floor shifter on ebay so i could learn how it works, i can get kinda stubborn about stuff like this...
