My Q has started this flooding issue (I think its flooding) it will run great and then once in a while I will go to start it and it will start idle ruff then stall and it takes alot of cranking and messing with it to get it to start again. this is intermitent and I cant seem to find any ryme or reason why it does it.

I have noticed that I get a heavy gas smell in the cab sometimes, mostly when it is cold outside. I replaced the fuel pump and control unit two months ago due to them going out. I thought this might cure the problem but has not.

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Michael

It could be your injector O rings are going bad, have seen that on Q sometimes... Wouldnt seem that it would be intermittant though..?

Thank you for the information I will check that out.

Any thoughts on the fuel rail being leaky? could that cause this type of problem?

On another note does anyone have a good source for buying parts aftermarket? I need the overhead consol that controls the sunroof and has the two map lights in it, also the leather surround on this piece in tan.

Thanks for putting up with a newbie to this board and Q45's

I just had an issue with a faulty fuel pressure damper. Some of those same symptoms. I hear it is virtually unheard of but worth a look.

Thanks,

can you tell me where this is located and what they did to test it?

I let the car sit all night and tried it this morning and it will crank but isnt even trying to start. I tested the fuel pump and control unit they are working fine so not sure what is the deal.

The FPD is located at the rear of the engine toward the right (passenger) side. It has three connections. The fuel filter connects on one side via fuel hose. It then has a hose that connects to the fuel rail. the third connection is a vacuum line that leads to the Air gallery. You'll need to "dig in" to expose the Air Gallery. That is where the potential leak would be. Gas coming through the vacuum line. My leak got so bad that it began leaking fuel through the throttle body, backfired flames, and caught my Air Filter and cold air intake on fire. Like I said before, it seems not likely that this is the cause of your problem but for me "Once almost burned, twice shy".Good luck.Harold

I think I solved the problem!!!!

I got to the diagnostics part so first I pulled the fuel line off the fuel rail and guess what not getting any gas. I thought this was weird I just replaced the fuel pump and the control unit. so to the trunk I go to see if everything is ok. guess what the wiring harness that goes from the top of the fuel pump to the first blue connection the black wire has a big cut in the shielding and some of the wires are frayed. I wigled it around a little bit and she started up and runs like a dream.

Now this has brought me to another question do the white caps that the wires go into on top of the fuel pump come off? Or is it hard wired to the fuel pump?

If their is a way that I can remove these wires from the top of the fuel pump I can get the wiring out and resolder this part back together.

Sounds like a question for a more experienced Q-Tech than myself. A frayed wire that wiggles power on and off can't be good though, especially in the tank.

You can unplug the wiring harness that plugs into the fuel pump and that harness goes to the FPCU however you cant completely detach it without removing the main connector under the rear seat. Im not even sure you could get it entirely out without a lot of hassle?
