So I was at a cruise this past weekend, you know the ususal, so on my way home, and i heard a ticking noise... by the time I made it home it was louder and the knocker sensor was going banana. So I'm getting the following done and need some help getting some parts.

Tomei PoncamsTomei Valve Springs Adrenaline Motorsport Cam GearsNismo Timing Belt

Now as far as the EX side retainers, does anyone know of a company that makes a strong set, like titanium, also valves themselves... I need something like titanium that will hold up to the abuse of race gas. The motor will be built to support over 700HP, making a drag car looking for over 600WHP, so I need this head to flow and hold up to the passes to come. Any Info would help thank you all!

Tomei ftw!! But be ready to pay out your ***. Great products and expensive but def. worth getting if you have the funds.

Good choice on the Tomei products! I would check out our sponsors first. I know that RavSpec in NY was running a special on Tomei poncams and springs just a few months ago. Give them a call and see what they have in stock. If time IS NOT an issue, I have not seen anyone with better prices than nengun.com. I bought my poncams from them and I would do it over again if I had to. Took like 1 month to get them though. They should be able to get you the valve springs too. As for actual valvetrain parts, Ferrea makes some cherry stuff. Crazy $$$$ but nice. Check them out....

how did you float a valve?revving to 8.5k on my stock valve train at 18psi on the 30r i never had valve float.are you sure its not a collapsed lifter?

I may have collapsed a lifter, I hope not tho... The heads coming off on tuesday, its sounds like a floated valve to me and some other ears, but either way i'm rebuilding...

floating a valve happens at high rpm when your springs can't push back the valve fast enough, it's not something that happens at idle. or even at freeway speeds.you might have something like valve tap from a lifter going out

hmmm this sounds weird. even when I was having valve lash issues, my knock sensor was not going too crazy. I'm thinking there might be something more major than something in the valve train. My uneducated guess would be a rod bearing...especially if it got worse as you drove.

heh i feel ya. once I got the head back on again and had lash issues because Ferrea didn't follow my valve specs, I didn't want to even look at it for a week.

i talked to ferrea about gettin Ti valves made and he said that i'd have to send in a valve to take out all of the guess work... he didnt seem to know much about the RB motors...

Lolz, I hope they're not confusing Titanium with Aluminum as well.

fti stainless steel makes for a better valve than Titanium... stronger too at very least for the intake side, they have some new fancy metals for exhaust that stand up to a lot. also Titanium springs and retainers are lighter but don't last as long

yeahh... i figured that titanium would be a good intake valve since its not taking on as much heat as the exhaust side is, and titanium is known to warp after long periods of heating and cooling i believe. So is stainless is good route to go for IN and EX side of the head??

It depends on how deep your wallet is :-\

You could always go with something like Hastalloy, Hast-X, or Inconnel. They can take _insane_ amounts of heat and not distort. Well above 2000*F. (Think combustor baskets and internals on -big- jet turbine engines.)

I have seen some some high-end exhaust systems utilizing Inconnel.

you know its a pretty good story to tell your girl so you can justify dumping large amounts of cash into teh motor

why would you run Ti valves, they arnt very durable in real world settings...a good ss valve should do the trick and even then its a bit overkill imho.

FWIW I KNOW that stock Nissan 300ZX exhaust valves are made from Inconel. I dont know enough about the RB yet to say the same, but I dont see why they wouldnt be made out of Inconel as well. If they are indeed inconel, there should be no reason to upgrade.

Chaos

Sorry to hear about your troubles, if you do find out that its time for valves, email me at [email protected] I sell Tomei products and I also have a set of used adrenaline cam gears (with upgraded/better bolts) for sale.

Thanks

alot of mis-information in this thread. ive talked to u on aim before chaos, and i can give u some ways to tell in 5 minutes if u have bent valves without using any tools. also got alot of other tips, ive been dealing with honda's for 7 years and i know all about bent valves lol.

Easiest way I have found to test if you have bad valves is with an air compressor and compression tester. Obviously the motor isnt going to hold any compression on the cylinder with bent valves.....so heres what you do

Take the compression tester stem, and remove the gauge, also remove the schrader valve from the compression tester stem

Thread the stem into where your spark plugs normally are, and stick the air compressor on the other end (its the same fitting as the compression tester gauge) but makes sure and regulate the air down to 50-60psi

Now manually turn the motor over with a 1/2" ratchet. You'll hear air either rushing out of the intake or exhaust, and if you dont have any bent valves eventually the cylinder will fill up with air to the point you cant turn the motor over by hand

Just wondering why you quoted me in your reply stating there was mis-information in the thread. If it has anything to do with my post, there is certainly incolnel valves in 90-96 300ZX heads.

well its all getting done this week I'll try the comp test trick and see what it is but it may also be a lifter like Carl indicated earlier... If it is are there any after market choices for them or just OEM replacements?

Andy I just wrote you a email so look out for it.
