I'm not a highly intelligent individual, so bear with me.91 240sx w/ manual transmission 180K on the car, unkown on the actual transmission. Clutch has about 2k on it.

Bought the car about 2k ago and it felt like the clutch was slipping so dad helped me (more like I helped dad) install a new Nissan clutch (the whole clutch kit)Drove car afterwards and everything felt fine.I took a 1400 mile trip in it and one of the times after filling up with gas and accelerating hard, it felt like the clutch was slipping on the 1-2 shift and the 2-3 shift, etc...Couple of days later, took it to a transmission shop. Tech looked at it and said the clutch wasn't slipping. He explained about the flex plate and when it was heated up, it would "lose its strength" and it would feel like the clutch was slipping.I was happy to find out that the clutch was alright but here the part that I don't get. When car is cold, clutch works perfectly. After driving the car for about ten hard minutes, the "slipping" feeling is back again on the shifts. Very annoying.Today, after driving around for an hour and being in 4th gear, I accelerated and the car started to slowly accelerate but the rpm's went up quickly and when I let off of the gas pedal, the rpm's dropped till it "grabbed".Long story short, it felt like the clutch was slipping while accelerating in 4th gear when the car was warm. When car is cold, everything is great.

Is this a typical problem of the manual trannys or is there anything typical of a transmission w/ 180k on it.Does it sound like it is the flex plate and if it does, what options do I have other than just driving the car as is?

Thanks for the help and sorry for the novel.

Wow a transmission shop told you your flex plate [which only an automatic trans has] was bad. I think he meant flywheel. The flywheel if it is glazed pretty good it will feel like that. Did you have it turned when you replaced the clutch? Its usually a good idea to have it done when doing a clutch.

Other possibility could be weak pressure plate springs. When they get hot they could be getting soft , not pressing clutch disc against the flywheel hard enough.

The flywheel was turned when everything was replaced.Very much as possiblility that he did mean the flywheel or maybe I misheard him. Thanks for your help NISTECH and your probably right about the pressure plate springs. It does make a little sense when I think about it.

Make sure your clutch master cylinder is adjusted correctly. Easiest way to do this is to take off your resevoir cap, then go press on the clutch fork so that you shove the pinion back into the slave cylinder. It should be fairly easy to move and the MC resevoir should fill with some fluid. If it's really hard/impossible to move, your MC is adjusted wrong, so that your compensting port is blocked and your MC is keeping the clutch slightly disengaged at all times after the fluid heats up and expands.

This is a good point. Also check your clutch pedal free play. The clevis shoul float freely on the clevis pin when the pedal is all the way up in its rest position.
