This just confirms my feeling that the Continentals suck.

But they replaced the tire with a goodyear.. did they replace ALL of the tires, or just one? If so, you at least need to get the tire on the other side replaced with the same model of tire... two reasons.

1) The different contact/tread patterns WILL cause handling degradation... you NEED to have matched tires between sides on the same position (LF must match RF, LR must match RR... but on an FWD, front and rear don't need to match necessarily)

2) Tires of the same size but different manufacture will have slightly different overall diameters. This will cause a small inaccuracy in your speedometer/odometer, but can ALSO attribute to handling problems.

That's why I'll be driving on Kumho's soon....and 18" rims. I think I read in the manual that our tires are only rated for 85 mph, I could be mistaken, but I do think that is what I read.

i think he went to another place, like a local tire dealer, and bought new tires.

But also the title state he drove 100+, sorry but our tires werent rated to go about like 85 like jemdawg mention. so i woudlnt be suprise if tires failed at such high speed. Another thing is that if the tire exploded at 100+ that is one squirely ride down to pull off to the side or the road.

que cogones i hope your careful and try to be safe, and keep the car under a reasonable speed limit.

The continentals are cheap tires. Cheap tires, plus road debirs at 100+mph = tire explosion. I'm glad you didn't spin or flip the car in the median.

DO NOT drive with mismatched tires on the front. They most likely have different diameters. This can put a lot of wear on the differential. It's like your constantly driving in a circle. Similarly, you should never drive wiht a temporary spare on the front at speeds over 45mph and as little as possible.

For one why would you be doing 100+ mph in this vehicle? In addition maybe the tires failed from excessive heat and speed? It's amazing the car didn't flip or control wasn't lost at that speed with a front end blow out. Maybe it's just me but I really don't think this vehicle or the tires were designed for that excessive speed. Try a Porsche!

becareful about that. :p

but ya, the tire rating arent actually that high, only upper scale performance tires are rated for 100+

the S model tires are rated R that means they can handle up to 106 mph/170 km/h

so you could drive up to 106 safely before the times pop. but extended period of time above that isnt really safe. then again. it alla bout road condition too.

First, you need at least HR rated tires to maintain speeds like that continuously. Preferably VR, WR, or ZR.

Second.. never EVER operate your vehicle on a public highway at that speed. Besides the fact that you become a deadly projectile (see the Fatal Porsche accident thread in general chat to see what happens to 18 year olds driving 100 MPH on the freeway), you are also a target for a reckless driving ticket.

Think getting to your friend's house a few minutes late is a drag? Try going to jail, and losing your license for a year.

Or worse, try getting killed on the highway because collisions at that speed are almost always fatal. To yourself and others.

(Leave earlier, slow down, it's not a race. And guess what? You'll get better gas mileage, too.)

But yes i understand the concequences :P thanks for the advice

Understanding the consequences and acting to avoid encountering them are two different things. Speeds like that are dangerous not only to you but to all others on the road. Better lose the "it'll never happen to me" mentality before you end up getting scraped off the road. Several years ago a friend of mine was killed by some asswipe who thought he was invincible until he lost it on a curve going 90. Sorry but I have no patience for people who display a cavalier attitude toward the the obvious unsafe operation of their car. Oh yah....I forgot.....your radar detector will save you.

I learned my lesson when I totalled my old Sentra. I was going way too fast on a slick turn because I thought I was too great of a driver to ever get into an accident. Not to blow my own horn, but I am a really good driver, however, going too fast on a corner is a mistake that an amature makes. You need to be aware of how fast you are going and how dangerous it can be to you and others. 80mph on the highway isn't too bad, but 100+ is. I'm lucky that I wasn't hurt in my accident, but it did create a financial setback for a few months, not to mention that I couldn't get an Impreza WRX STI. Nonetheless, I am more than satisfied with the V, but I'll get the STI someday.

I'm a huge believer in participating in a driving school to learn how to drive vehicles in all kinds of situations. There's so much you can learn that you'll never be able to learn on public roads. A lot of the information taught can save your life. So if you do decide to fulfill your need for speed out on the roads, you can do it more safely. But you shouldn't use the world as your race track. I think it's sad that I live in a state where you can get a license from passing a simple sign test and a <1 mile driving test. I see everyday, reports on the TV about young people in general crashing and killing every one in the car just because they had little or no seat time in a car. When I was younger I used to drive that fast for fun or what I thought was a need (late for work), but as I got older I realized that it's not worth it. One moment of stupidity could cause a life time of unimaginative pain or end my life. If I need to fulfill my need for speed, I'll buy track time to keep my bad habits off the roads. If I can't afford it at the time, we'll I guess I don't really need it. But I'm no angel. Occasionally I may test my 0-60 on an unpopulated road.

I'm going to wear the continentals as long as I safely can, and switch to either michelins or ohtsus afterwards.

Odd, I'm pretty sure I read in another thread on this site that the Continentals they put on the Versa were reasonably good OEM tires and were a good match for the car. I know nothing about Continentals so I cant comment. I will probably be replacing them with Kumho's but not til I have to. Maybe I should drive at 100+ to speed up the process.

I've read that before too, however.. having owned many many OE tires before... the Continentals are about the third worst... Just barely ahead of a set of Hankooks, and a set of Firestones.

Far and away the best were the Michelin Energy MXV's on my last Kia.

I think I'm going to stay away from the Michelins. On my truck, I ran through 7 tires in 3 years . I constantly had problems with the tires wearing down quickly and picking up road debris in tread. 3 tires went flat from road debris and 4 wore down quickly. I switched to BF Goodrich and I haven't had much wear after a year and no flats.

Well first of all, i don't have the "it will never happen to me mentality" B/c things HAVE happened to me that i thought never would. Im not gonna go into that unless you would really like to know, then feel free to message me, im sorry about your friend. Truly am, however, learn the facts before you go railing on people about what they do and don't do. Driving conditions were wonderful, there were NO cars on the road, whenever I saw a car, i immediatly slowed down to about 80 until i passed them. So the only risk i have is to myself. But thanks for your concern with your so profound attitude.

Please excuse the fussing as this topic was not meant for this
