does a used transmission need to be flashed when? And if it doesn't will it hurt the transmission?

On cars/trucks these days everything seems to need flashing when replaced. I imagine that as long as the transmissions are like for like it should not be an issue. Of course you will find out soon enough if it does need to be flashed if it won't shift or if you turn on the MIL. But best educated guess I would say 'no', it does not need to be flashed though I could be wrong.
