Hello

I have an '86 non-Turbo which I'm trying to start after 3 years in storage and in non-running condition....The car now has a new battery, gets spark and fuel (fresh fuel in tank) and cranks strong but does not start. I suspect some sensor(s) might be not working correctly hence the no start condition but I'm still investigating.

I noticed the flashing SECURITY light in the dash even with no key in the ignition. I put the key in and turn it to ON position and the SECURITY light is still flashing. It keeps flashing even in the ACC key position. It seems to go OFF when the car is in START (engine cranking) mode.

How is the SECURITY suppose to be working on an '86 ZX?? Is there a correct way to disable this security and what effects does it have on starting the vehicle?? I don't have an Owner's manual.

In case you're wondering I purchased this vehicle in non-running condition so I do not know much about its security and its functions.

When I pulled the 10 amp fuse labeled "Security Warning" the flashng security light went off but still no start..

If info will be appreciated - Thanks!

if you pull the security fuse you diaable it, but I'm pretty sure that the security would kill the ignition to the starter if that were the problem

if the engine is cranking and oyu have spark and fuel, then you have a compression problem, either the motor is shor or the cam timing is out, or the ignition timing is way out

Thank you for your response....

I found the problem with the flashing SECURITY issue. One of the wires to the hood alarm contacts was badly corroded. I cleaned it with a wire brush and electrical contact cleaner and now the alarm and flushing SECURITY light work as they should. The alarm is enabled when the door is locked with the key and stays on solid for 30 sec and then goes OFF after that.

However, the vehicle still does not start and run....It cranks strong and gets fuel and spark and I got it to run for a very brief few seconds a couple of times but it never stays running. The previous owner told me that this motor was rebuild a few years ago (before my purchase) but of course I never heard it run. I did change the cap and rotor but not the distributor timing. I will next check the timing and compression, like you suggested.

Anyone has a good write-up for checking the ignition timing??

Thanks for your help

the hood sensor is right behind the drivers side headlight, should have a little rubber cover on it

you said you have spack and fuel, woudl you mind detailing how you verified this? was the car running before you replaced the cap and rotor? you verified the plugs are in the correct locations ont he cap? (they are labled on the cap), have you checked the ecu for codes?

to check the ignition timing you have to have the car running, the physical timing has to be correct for the ignition timing to be correct, if you set the crank to tdc you can remove the upper timing cover and verify that the cam dots align with the dots on the backing plate (the crank turns twice to each cam rotation so if they don't line up rotate the engine another 360 degrees, and when all the dots are alignes the rotor button should be pointing in the general direction of the #1 contact inside the cap (remember this does not line up with the wires as the cap has some internal routing for the outside pickup points
