I'm sure you guys remember my thread. I can't find it anymore, must have been deleted. Oh well no biggie. I get my motor all back together and take it for a drive and go real easy for about 40 miles. I changed the oil several times after a few minutes of idle each time just to get as much of the crap that was bearings out. So tonight I take little buddy out for a drive and what happens? I start hearing a slight tapping/knocking. SON OF A BEE!!! What the flip could that noise be now? I have hockey puck mounts so everything is shaking like crazy and barely aside from the vibration of my fender I can hear a slight noise when I accelerate. Now, I haven't even gotten past 6 PSI of boost, and I also haven't gotten past 4k RPMs I've eased on it in 4th gear going 45 but thats it. It sounds like some type of knocking but I want to believe it can't possibly be rod knock again. Everything was fixed and torqued and checked twice. It sounds like it isn't as "deep in the motor" as it was before and maybe talk about lifters may be the key. But how will I check?

Cliff Notes

Fix rod knockFix turboBuy 10 Qts of oil and three filtersStart car, idle for 5 mins, change oil/filter.....repeat....3 times

Fill up with 0w40 Mobile 1 and good filter and drive car for about 30 miles maybe 40 under hardly any boost until closer to 40 or so miles.

Start hearing tapping/knocking again but maybe higher up in motor. Hard to tell, but seems like its the same piston (4th, farthest away from front of car.)

help....

So, you ran oil through your car in the hope of removing debris? What kind of debris? Continuing to run a motorthat had a bearing go without rebuilding the whole motor is playing big games of risk in my book. If not, you probably have a little bit of tapping from your lifters. You can rebuild or replace the lifters or live with it.

lifter chatter is very common and higher up in the motor......

maybe something as simple as a loose bolt.

then agian my car makes all kinds of rattling sounds from the 3in dp......

We pulled the oil pan and had motor out of car for days. We took the oil pan off and let all the oil drip out while wrapped up and then cleaned everything we could with brand new clean shop towels. Then we flushed it several times.. I'll go over every bolt to make sure and lifter chatter sounds likely and hopeful...

Any ideas? How do you go about changing the lifters?

when you said fix the Fix rod knock exactly what did you do? Did you have the crank turned has it been replaced , did you have the rods checked to see if they out around? I have seen many engines get rebuilt with a loose crank and when they get to operate temperature the mains rattle.

rod bearings were replaced and the crank wasn't damaged at all. AS SOON as I heard a slight knocking I turned the motor off. And it idled fine until I gave it a slight rev then I heard the knock. I did that once and kept it off until I fixed it.

My lifter tap was a constant sound with the motor full warm ad anything above 1000RPM. The sound never got louder or more intense. I pulled the lifters and soaked them in acetone and they quited down for about a week, then started back up. Two (intake on #4, where the sound was coming from) were totally stuck. So I bought 2 new ones from Courtesy Nissan and I was about to put em when the night before I was to do it I wrecked my car.

It is easy to do. Remove the valve covers, timing belt tensioner, cam gear, cam caps and then the lifter. Total process is about an hour and the hardest part is resetting the timing belt.

So if Acetone cleaned them, would Seafoam also remedy the noise? I was told that was a remedy but not a fix. I'm totally down to fix them so I don't hear that noise again. Is it ok to drive? Should I keep it garaged until I change them? I don't wanna make things worse.

And just today I drove it again and then the knock came back. Don't drive it. I'm thinking our oil pumps went out because they were dry while we fixed everything. I'm selling my motorset with everything but my turbo as I got the ability now to do my next project. I won't however sell my turbo.
