Junkyard transmission from a newer one, rock auto for the rest of the parts, should be good to go!
If a newer transmission doesn't fit that older engine, could just swap the engine out with it.

Yep, that's what I'm thinking too. It's not hard to save money if you do it yourself. It's when you have to pay a shop that it gets expensive fast.
