I came across this video whilst searching for something else. I have seen numerous posts from 2011 and up owners regarding a peeling issue on the steering wheel. I thought this might be helpful for those who have no warranty to address this issue.

hope this helps

just curious, do all years peel? asking cause i have a 2013 and it seems totally fine.. just wondering if I should make some preventative actions to preserve the leather.

According to the numerous members who were invovled in the posts, it seems ti be the non-leather areas where the control buttons are.

Dark interiors only peel from what I've seen...

My wheel is starting to fade in frequent use areas.

I successfully took mine apart yesterday and peeled off the old coating. I spray painted it with plastidip and it looks good as new

How hard was it to take the wheel apart? I want to put a new cover on the leather but need to take off the controls to do so.

I am currently working with a company to make dry carbon fiber overlays for our steering wheel. The plan is you can just install it without having to remove the steering wheel. This would be a great solution for the peeling and also gives the car a sporty look to it. Stay tuned!

Very easy. I had no prior car experience and definitely took my time to research what to expect and what (simple) tools were needed.
I also stitched a new leather wheel cover on my wheel, but did it when I first got the car. Had I had known how easy it was to take apart the wheel, I would have done so and it would've been easier to stitch on my couch watching tv :chuckle:

Did you take the wheel completely off the car or did you just remove the plastic parts that were peeling? What tools did you need?

Thanks!

I took the wheel off and completely dissembled the steering wheel control down to the individual plastic pieces on the left and right side.
After removing said pieces, I peeled off the the plastic layer and spray painted it with PlastiDip (~6 coats). Re-assembled in reverse.

You'll need:
- Ratchet
- Tamper Torx T30 http://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-T30-Ta ... r+t30+torx
- Torx T40 http://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-T40-To ... /202913547
- Torque wrench 20-100 lb 3/8inch https://www.lowes.com/pd/Kobalt-3-8-in- ... ch/3381200
- 19mm 6 point Deep Socket 3/8 inch http://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-3-8-in ... /202913533
- Standard Philips Head Screwdriver

Use this guide and video as a reference so you know what to expect, as they are very similar:

In case you don't know how to use a torque wrench: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3v3hLvuO_KU&t=206s

When you remove the airbag, set it aside facing upright (according to service manual, contrary to the above video).
Right after removing the center nut with the torque wrench and 19mm socket, be sure to take a picture of the center of the steering wheel and column, focusing on where the lines sit. They won't perfectly match up, it'll be either on the left or right side. Install it exactly like so when you re-assemble.

After you remove the steering wheel completely (Mind the cables!), follow the above g37 guide to remove the rear housing and then just look for the deep small philips screws to take the rest apart.
If you or anyone else need any additional help, feel free to dm me and we can even facetime or skype to go over what doesn't make sense :bigthumb:
