First year for second generation airbags?

Does anyone know which model year of the I30 (or the 4th gen. Maxima) was the first to have second generation airbags?

I am looking for a decent I30 or 4th gen. Maxima. My wife is fairly small and light, and I would prefer her not to be sitting in front of a more powerful first generation airbag!

I have searched the web, the NHTSA website, and various forums, but am not turning up a definitive answer.

Thanks for any help.

I believe it was 1998, but I could be wrong.
