Just as I got comfy in the lounge with my cuppa and muffin, Brian tells me it's the bank-1 O2 sensor and they have to order it. He puts me in a brand new Q50 and off I go to the office. (review of the Q50 to follow as I usually get an M37 or Q70 as a loaner). Turns out, this is NOT as cheap to replace as I thought. I have the MaxCare warranty from CarMax where it was purchased. It costs me 0$ for repairs at one of their facilities - or - $50 at any other facility including the dealer.
Here is the final bill:

They charged:
0.8 hours labor to diagnose
0.8 hours labor for repair
0.8 hours to re-program the car after repair.
Seems a bit much, don't you think? I remember Ilya replaced an O2 sensor on his M45 and it didn't seem all that involved or any where near this pricey. Thank God for warranties, although I think I could have done this myself if it weren't a covered repair - and for a fraction of the total cost.I was also surprised that this happened at only 42k miles. Brian said it isn't "rare' but it isn't unheard of either on a 7 year old M series.
So .... I warranty runs out when the miles reach 150,000 or Sept 2020. Hopefully (or maybe not) I will need other repairs before then so I can use up the rest of the $2,500 I paid for the warranty.
