Well, I finally got a chance to go try out some of the stuff I read you guys talking about all the time. Don't laugh - I have no intention of doing this often, just wanted to understand it a little better.
Keep in mind, the Q gets sideways at least daily, but it's usually slinging the tail out with "excessive acceleration" (new tires every 8 months)...
Anyhow, a local buddy has a completely gutted and caged 89 Coupe with a SOHC KA, welded diff, 10" FN's with stretched tires, 5-pt harness, and some suspension mods. It's been in my garage for a few days, we're swapping the clutch.
The SOHC in this car is a freak, no one can figure out why it's so powerful (low mileage, with some internal and head work).
Anyway, I take it out Saturday for some "playtime". There's an enormous, smooth parking lot less than a mile from my house that covers 1/4 block. Pretty secluded, good place to practice.
First attempt - Spun out.
Second attempt - understeer. Dammit.
Third attempt - Gee, nice donut. That ain't drifting.
Fourth attempt, I recall something about "clutch kick". Ah - That helps! A little sideways action!
Fifth attempt, decide to try something I recall from my riding days - throw in a quick feint to the opposite direction before the kick (like you do on a motorcycle)... Seems to upset the weight balance just enough to get that car into a good sideways slide.... Added some throttle when it started to pull out, a little steering correction.... HEY!!!! This is FUN!!! Covered about 100 yards.... Oh crap - running out of room!
Gave it one more slide before hanging it up for the night, didn't want to burn up tires that aren't mine or attract any "official" attention.
I can imagine this would be a lot more fun in a car with coilovers, and some boost.
Hmmmmm..... There's a pretty beat-up 92 coupe for sale down the street from my office.... Hmmmmmm.....
