So I bought a new toy to keep in TN for when I'm on leave today.

It's a 1974 Honda CB550. It runs, drives, and has full operation on all of its accessories (which totals like 3 things, but still.) Anyways, I picked it up for $650. Pretty stoked about it. Literally 10 minutes after getting it home, I couldn't keep the tools away from it. This picture was taken 30-45 minutes after I got it back.

After that, things came a little slower. As of now, there's minor rust on hardware (caliper bleed point, misc bolts, ect,) missing/ mismatched hardware, and a couple of mechanical things wrong. It doesn't start without a jump, because the battery is obscenely dead and not coming back, the brake fluid looks like unprocessed honey mixed with rubbing alcohol, and the rear drum was completely seized from sitting for so long. A little 3 in 1 oil and a ball peen hammer made quick work of that, though.

So basically, before I went riding an already unsafe vehicle, I wanted to take it apart and make sure everything was put together correctly, and in working order. It was a good thing I did, since the brakes wouldn't have helped me out very much. So here's a little list of to-do things for me, and eventually, I'll start this as a build. Yes, I'm going to Cafe it. I've always wanted one, and this one is just about the perfect specimen to do so with. A little ratty, but intact enough to be a complete bike. Like I said, I'm pretty stoked about this beast. Also, on a side note, this is the only cruiser that I've ever enjoyed the feel of sitting on.

So what do you guys think? Worth the $650?

Yes. I love that era Honda (stock though, not cafe but that's just me). It's a 40 yr old classic bike, and since you're able to do the work yourself, and the engine runs well, I think you did well overall, especially if you intend to cafe it. Post more pics when you're done. :dblthumb:

Very nice. I've been thinking about picking up something similar to the Suzuki 1der posted...something comfortable but capable.

My dad has a Yamaha that's similar vintage to that Honda. '73 250 Enduro. It's so gutless, but it sounds wonderful and looks fantastic. It needs rear shocks bad and still runs like a champ. Starts on the first kick every time even after 40 years.

Is it bad that I just turned the key on and thought to myself that the fuel pump wasn't priming?

Anyways, so I was checking the valve clearances in hopes to find the source of the mysterious backfire/ carb flames, and I did this:

MOTHERF*****!

Anyways, I had to put everything on hold and drive 2 hours each way to the guy selling valve lash adjuster caps. Ugh, how I love to burn 4 hours of my life on a $3 part.

Anyways, here's a video from earlier today, while it was actually running:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/aaronparri ... otostream/

After riding, it idles high, then calms down after I mess with the idle set screw. While riding, it'll backfire, won't go over 2.5K, and has a serious lack of power. Then eventually, it starts to act like a car with a dying alternator, where if you give it any gas, it sputters and almost dies, but a lot rougher, like it's a mixture problem. Anyone got any clues/helpful advice? This is my first vehicle that doesn't have fuel injectors and OHC. I are lost. I still need to find a manometer, so I can balance these stupid carbs out. Would that make that big of a difference?

Ya dun goofed!
How long ago since the carbs were given some care?
It's possible some stuff is gunked up or that some seals are leaking.

This thread reminded me of this video, here's some inspiration. :P

Carbs were just rebuilt and look completely brand new. They just weren't balanced. I'm wondering exactly HOW much the balancing affects the running of the bike.

D: Just found a completely torn vacuum line on the #4 carburetor. Yeah, gonna go to O'Reilley's tomorrow and get a bunch of vacuum tubing, along with fuel lines, cause those are hard as a rock too.

EDIT: The plot thickens. All those vacuum lines on the carbs just run into the space behind the battery and aren't hooked up to anything. TO THE SERVICE MANUAL!

EDITx2: Those lines don't mean anything. They're supposed to be hooked up and run to nothing-ness. Which begs the question, why have them in the first place?

What does a manometer measure? Girth?

Nice find on the bike. Ive come to the realization that an old 80s bike is sufficiently fun while still limiting my ability to kill myself.

It's like 4 vacuum gauges that you hook up one to each carburetor and make sure that they are all making the same amount of vacuum. It's how you sync them up. No one carries them in stores, along with any other parts for this bike, so it's been frustrating to work on so far.

I know, I want to keep it, but it's hurting my performance, and is wayyyyyy too loud. Some douche decided the insides of the muffler on a carbureted engine weren't necessary to maintain backpressure, and cut them out. Whatever. I'll figure something out, cause I really want to keep the trumpet pipes, or possibly do a 4-to-1 trumpet pipe, but exhaust is ridiculous hard to find for this bike. If I can get baffles put into these that sound half decent, I'll keep these and powdercoat them.
