Well I decided to change my oil to synthetic oil today. I went with mobil 1 in my 2001 i30 and she loves it. As soon as I took it out I could notice the difference right away. Idle is so much smoother now . I dont knwo what took me so long to make the switch. Another satified customer!

Welcome aboard!

Good call on the full-syn, these motors do very well on it.

when is the last time you changed your oil? it could be the placebo effect but nevertheless the switch is always good

I personally do not like mobil1 since it feels so thin... a lot of members here use royal blue or redline with good sucess

you can get redline at myoilshop.com

A friend of mine who is knowledgable about cars always warns me to stay away from synthetic motor oil because they will leak through the seals in the engine.

Comments?

That is false. My Maxima has about 160k miles on her, and it has had Mobil1 synthetic in it since 30k miles. No leaks, no oil consumption.

There is *some* truth to that - Synthetic oil CAN leak where no previous leaks were apparent.

However, that's often in cars that switch after a TON of miles, and have bad seals to begin with. At that point, switching to full-syn really doesn't make much sense anyway.

As we always tell people, the BEST oil is CLEAN oil, regardless of what type. Synthetic simply offers a small additional measure of protection at the "ragged edge".

in addition, synthetic oil is supposedly better against thermal break down. I don't know any turbo folks running non- synthetic

You think my ~208k miles might put my car in this position? I was planning to switch to full synth with my next oil change.

Meanwhile, the A34 had it's first taste of synthetic last weekend.

Nope - I'd stick to dino juice with that many miles.

so would you folks say that a VQ engine with 90K miles is or isn't a good candidate for synthetic motor oil?

I guess it would depend on how regularly maintenace has been done over the life of the car, the amount of abuse it's seen, and whether it has sat undriven for long periods of time (which would cause seals to dry out).

You could always give it a try, and switch back if you develope any leaks.

I just bought the car with 89k miles but with no maintenance history. The dealership that I bought it from told me that they had the maintenance records but destroyed them to protect the identity of the previous owner. How frustrating is that?

smells like bull**** to me.

how about just ripping the owners info off of the receipt?

my vq30 has 96k miles, and i use 5w30 GTX. OCI of 3k miles

My 2002 I35 has 93K miles & has used synthetic since 3K miles. When approaching 100K on my 2 previous cars (each purchased used at about 45K miles) I started using Slick 50 and noticed smoother running. on a VQ engine, is use of Slick 50 overkill - or low cost insurance for longer engine life?

P.S.: Are Brembos for the I35 overkill?

Better brakes are never overkill.

Not a fan of "Slick50" and other "snake oil" additives...

Brakes are a good call tho!

If you can run synthetic witout leaks, then synthetic would be the better option. But it would be a pain to have te replace a lot of seals if it couldn't hold it. If you wanted to try it, you might try a slightly heavier weight then you normally would. One of the big pluses to using synthetic is it's detergent properties. pull a valve cover on a motor that's been running synthetic for a while and there will be no build-up. On Dino oil, you can expect some varnish. I just put in a quart of synthetic in my 137K max and I'll be checking the seals soon. Hopefully it holds up and then I'll be making sure its on a steady diet of synthetic.

I just changed to Mobile 1 0w40 on a 170k ka24de and have no signs of leaks after 500 miles hopefully no leaks will arise. It's no maxima, but just giving some feed back. Before the switch the oil was changed religiously every 3k.
