Hey guys, yesterday I started my KA-T for the first time after starting the turbo project. I wanted to check for any vac leaks or oil leaks on the lines. Everything check out fine. I still have the I/C piping to finish (I started the car by-passing the I/C)

Well my question is: is it normal for the SS manifolds to put out smoke? It looks like it's burning a coating or something. Just wanted to check with you guys if that's ok and if it will go away.

Yeah that is a normal acurance, when you istall the manifold you touch it and same with the turbo and if you car is like 90% of the 240's out there your hands had oil and grease and anything else that you find in the engine bay. Well all that crap gets on the manifold when you touch it and when you start your car and it begins to get hot it starts to burn all that crap off. So that is why you are smoking. It should stop after a little while.

Make sure you dont try to drive the car like that. A turbo with no resistance or nothing to fill is an unhappy turbo. It will over-spin and could damage it, especially if you got on the throttle.

Manifold smoke is completely normal first start. You'll get weird smells for the first week or so.

Yeah its totally normal, i dont know if you know so just sayin dont try spraying any water or anythin on the manifold hot, where you spray it could warp the metal in that area and crack.

Good luck with the ka-t!!!

i have turboed mine 3 times, 4th coming in about a week first start up, fully built my ka within the past month!!!

thanks to all for the replies.

480, when you say resistance you mean by the I/C or the muffler?

He means not having the turbo output hooked to the motor. Even if the wastegate is hooked to the compressor housing, it will still overspeed. Which could end in several different ways, none being good.

Ooooh no, ok... no, gladly I wasn't doing that. I just put the piping straight from the compressor housing outlet to the throttle body because I still have some couplers pending for the I/C piping.

I just needed to start the car in order to put it on ramps and jack it up from the back, so I can do the exhaust work.

Let me tell you, the sound of the turbine whistling when I did that is sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet!!!

Sorry... I get excited about dumb stuff....

Here is how the car is going so far. Can't wait to get the missing reducer couplers so I can hook up the I/C and put the bumper back.

i would FOR SURE recommend moving your Power Steering Res. farther away from the turbo!

and moving your plug wires farther away, melting things is not good, just to be safe!!!

Yeah you're right, I'll keep that in mind. I have to make some kind of bracket to move it a couple of inches away and maybe use some kind of thermal shield material like the one for the mbc. I think I'm going to need longer hoses too though...

For the spark plug wires I guess I could also wrap them in thermal shield too.

I think I'm going to end up buying the turbo heat blanket they sell in Enjuku Racing, it goes around the turbine side of the turbo, which is what generates most heat right?

The turbo blankets are a great buy, seriously will increase your turbos performance as well as save your engine bay excess heat.

You can check out this thread if you want to get down on a Nico turbo blanket group buy. 100 shipped, high quality too. This is a MUCH better price than you would get anywhere else. zer...age=1

Im going to be buying the rest of those blankets, i need three myself(lol), and i know i can sell the rest. So jump on board within the next day or two or its gona be over with.

Took the car out just around the block not revving it past 3500rpm. I wanted to make sure there were no oil leaks. I also found a boost leak that made my car when I came to a stop.

I must say.... It feels like another car

I still don't have the I/C on it because the reducers haven't arrived.

I also need to install the BOV, because I don't want the back pressure hitting the compressor wheel too hard... Now, why do some BOV's have two small inlets and some only have one? (not counting the main inlet where the boost enters)

One is for the regular vacuum. The second is supposed to be hooked up to a boost source, supposedly it helps the BOV open faster. You can put one of those small cone filters from Autozone if you'd like, just don't plug it.

cool beans

what size turbo is that and what are you using for tuning?

Make sure your engine is running perfect with no leaks or other problems before you start beating the hell out of it but it seems like you are doing just that.

I'm glad I asked, because I was thinking of pluggin it... lol

If I were to use that port, I guess any source of boost such as a hot pipe port or somethingwould suffice right?

That's a T3/T4 TO4E 50 trim, it's a no-brand "generic" turbo (I know, I know... I also have a Garret $$, but that baby is not going in until I feel comfortable and knowledgeable enough on boosting the KA, then I'll go with the Garret, 550cc, JWT ECU and a turbosmart WG set at 15psi . For now, this is my "lab"). It brought an external wastegate set at 7psi, but I heard it open before 6psi when I was in third gear; which is fine, since I want to take baby steps on boosting anyways.

As far as tuning I just have the Walbro 255 and the 8:1 FMU with the stock injectors. My car won't see anything over 7psi for a while. Nevertheless, as soon as I get my silicone reducers and put the front mount I/C I want to take it to the dyno to see my A/R's and whp

turbo bells, turbo bells, turbo all the way....

BTW, that's a clean kouki man, and I like the extra cooling on the I/C, too bad we don't have that in Florida

Yes it should, at least that's how my Turbonetics Raptor BOV works.

Almost there.... boy fitting the I/C and the piping (diy) was a day's work....

Since my car is a non-SE version, it came without the front lip, so the I/C would show under the bumper. I found the threat about the Home Depot mod, with the diamond lock plastic... what do you guys think of it, not bad huh?

I was wondering if it would be completetly out of the question to spray a little bit of black paint on the intercooler. I'd like it to be more stealth, but not if it interfere with its cooling abilities... any thoughts?

Its looking good. about the painting intercooler, many people on here have stated it wont make a difference either way. My personal beliefs differ, but if you did I would use radiator paint, whereever the hell you find that

OZ you should get some videos of the car since it is done. I'm really interested in seeing it in action.

Good idea, I'll tell my brother in law to help me out since he's more familiar with A/V stuff.

It won't be pushing it hard just yet though, my competition clutch is on the way, but even when I install it, there is a 500 mile break in period.

To be honest, it's a really fun install, if you like to work on your car a lot. I like the top mount look too. Just be sure to put a turbo blanket on the turbine housing because the master brake cylinder, spark plug wires, A/C hose, and Power Steering reservoir will be very close. Oh, also the piping might be a little harder to fit. The cold side will be the same, for the hot side, you just need to cut your existing pipes and use some couplers and/or reducers to make them fit to the top mount setup.

No it's actually pretty sturdy. As long as you use enough screws to bolt it the bottom side of the bumper, it will hold and mold really nice to the contour of the bumper. I think the width of the plastic is about 1/4 inch of flexible plastic.
