Reports: Secretary of State Colin Powell to Resign

By George GeddaThe Associated PressMonday, November 15, 2004; 9:53 AM

Secretary of State Colin Powell has reportedly told top aides he intends to resign from President Bush's Cabinet, high-ranking State Department officials said Monday.

Powell, who long has been rumored planning only a single term with Bush, told his aides that he intends to leave once Bush settles on whom to succeed him, said the officials, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Word of Powell's imminent departure kicked off a new week of Cabinet shuffling for Bush, who is planning his second term.

The White House was preparing an announcement to confirm Powell's resignation. According to one official, Powell expects that his departure date will be sometime in January. It was not immediately clear whether he will leave before Bush's second inauguration on Jan 20.

Most of the speculation on a successor has centered on U.N. Ambassador John Danforth, a Republican and former U.S. senator from Missouri.

Powell has had a controversial tenure in the chief of state's job, reportedly differing on some key issues at various junctures with Secretary of State Donald H. Rumsfeld. Powell, however, has generally had good relations with his counterparts around the world, although his image standing has been strained by the U.S.-led war in Iraq.

Powell, a former chairman of the military Joint Chiefs of Staff, led the Bush administration argument at the United Nations for a military attack to oust Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, arguing a weapons-of-mass-destruction threat that the administration could never buttress.

Actually, Powell was supposedly only planning on one term with Bush. But of course, since he and Rumsfeld are leaving, they are taking a few other cabinet members with them. This could be dangerous if all the new members are anything like Gonzalez. Senate is now Republican majority too. We'll just have to wait and see how it plays out.

Did I miss something? I'm pretty sure Rummy is staying on. Did you perhaps mean Ashcroft?

Connie Rice is considering leaving too, unless she can get a secretary position in the cabinet.

You guys don't understand that most Cabinet members only stay on for one term. This is a perfectly normal occurrence.

Can you give me some examples of cabinent members stepping down in the past? I know I'm gonna have a debate with a co-worker about this. I'd like to be able to give him some examples.

Sure. The 10 out of Bill Clinton's 14 Cabinet members were replaced.

Examples: Madeleine Albright replaced Warren Christopher as Secretary of State after Clinton's first term.Alexis Herman replaced Robert Reich as Secretary of Labor.William Cohen replaced William Perry who replaced Lee Aspin as Secretary of Defense.

Clinton also had 4 different Secretarys of Commerce.

That's the thin line we tread. That's why I've stayed out of it.

All I can say is that wherever Gen. Powell goes, he's got my full support.

Meet the Press was saying that Connie Rice wanted to be Secretary of Defense. But Rumsfield wanted to stay on in his position to see through what they started in Iraq.bud

Don't you mean 2 down, 2 to go? Ashcroft and Cheney are leaving.

And Cheney leaving is old news. That is, he was planning on leaving months ago(for personal reasons, his wife wanted him to spend more time at home)

The left had its chance.

I don't know which is worse - the prospect of a change in the Oval Office or listening to people whine for the next 4 years.

(BTW, this is mainly a rant resulting from the blithering and squawking in my office, which is populated with several sore losers, and the topic hasn't changed for 2 weeks....)

Let's keep the politics out (as always).

I was never a big fan of Ashcroft, didnt hate him either. But the bad karaoke would have singlehandedly earned him the boot if I were in charge.

She's one tough chick. I'll think she'll do well in as Sec of State. Then again, I thought Powell was doing a good job trying to balance the rest of Bush's team

Im not sure if someone else already corrected you liberal know-nothings but, every time the president gets a second term most of his administration leaves after the first term. Reason is most of them have to spend 4 years without their family. Besides Powell leaving is a good thing. He was a middle of the road type, we need some hardcore right wingers in there. Which im sure were going to get now

All the changes are "normal". And Condor would make a good SS. If Greenspan leaves, he will be hard to replace. That man knows money.

Quote »In 1972, Richard Nixon asked his Cabinet secretaries and the entire White House staff, hundreds of people, to submit letters of resignation, so he could decide whom he wanted to keep. Turnover was massive. But the current situation, "as normal transitions go, with the party staying in power, is an unusually high number of Cabinet resignations, and it appears that two or three more may be in the offing," said David Gergen, an adviser to Presidents Nixon, Ford, Reagan and Clinton. He suggested that the turnover was due not so much to discontent as to the fatigue of staying on through four unusually difficult years. [/quote]

David Gergen has become political and has said some anti bush statements in the past. So whatever he says means little to me. Plus he teaches at harvard, hardcore lefties there JK but yes he is a anti bush so it matters not what he has to say. Anyone that touches clinton turns to salt :p

Just pointing out that close to 30 years now it's somewhat "common practice" for the cabinet to resign as an incumbent president is re-elected.
