a rubber ring? If so this rubber ring goes in the groove inlaid at the top of your oil filter. Make sure when you put the ring into the groove you put some oil on it. Makes for a better seal between the car and the filter. This is an image a a guy putting in the rubber seal around the top.

However if its a tiny metal ring its for your oil drain plug. It is wise whenever you change your oil to change the metal washer between the plug and oil pan for sealing and siezing principles. Over time the washer will bend and shape to the bolt due to the heat and torque of the bolt under it. This will make for a bad seal and the bolt will not seal properly next time installed and it could possibley leak. So its wise to change it often to prevent this. Hope this helps

When i bought the filter, I didn't get no washer. When i removed the drain plug it was so tight I cracked my cheap socket. Had to use a wrench. I didn't see any washer in there. Do i need to put one on?

Just a thought, but could the lack of a seal mean it is made onto the filter instead of it being seperate?

I buy my filters from the local dealership and they always give me a washer for each filter purchased.
