Folks

I went to do my first oil change today at 1500 miles and am running into some trouble I was hoping you could help me with. I finally found the oil filter # 1520865FOC. Put I can't find anyone who carries this or any replacement filter. Has anyone found a differnent number that works without going to the dealer?

Anyone who has already done this: Are there any tricks to the change to minimize the risk of a mess underneath?

P.S. do you know if the car starts with fully synethetic oil. A friend of mine recommends not doing synthetic on the first 1-2 changes. Wanted to know what folks thought.

I was told by, a of all places, a tire and wheel guy that the car may not even have oil filters out yet for it. I thought well how the heck would he know that, but since he had no specs on the G37 tires and wheels yet since it was so new, that they wouldnt have parts etc available to "others" yet either.

Dude if I were you I would suck it up and go to the dealer until you have "experienced" techs out there to service your car available ....You dont want to void any warranty at this point. ( same for your camber thread!) Definitely consult with a Infiniti tech and warranty specialist at your dealer!

As far as your synthetic oil issue. From what I understand once you go with one stick with it. Infiniti put the grade and type of oil in it for a reason why screw it up? Let your friend put it in their car and see if Infiniti will take care of a bad engine!

All above is IMO, I am not a mechanic, and dont play one on TV...Good luck!

It is recommended to wait 1-3 changes or 4-5k miles before switching to synthetic. It helps for everything to break in and seal. It will have no adverse affect on your car or engine. If anything you will feel it all runs smoother.

As far as the parts go, I would go to the dealership for your first change. By the time your second one comes around they'll have the part in stock at all most any spot you choose. It's only a couple extra bucks.

As far as the mess, i havn't done a change yet so I don't know. But if you do complete yours, let us know how it goes, and what you did to make it easier, or what you would do next time to make it easier.

Thanks.

You can use Purolator oil filters which are usually available at auto parts stores. Here in CA, they stock 'em at Pep Boys.

You can use either of these oil filters:

#PL14612 (This is Purolator's premium oil filter, costs a little bit more)#L14612

IMHO, there is really no proof that using synthetic oil in a new engine will hurt it in any way. You can start using synthetic oil immediately.

If anyone disagrees, show me some solid proof that synthetic oil in a new engine has negative effects.

Important to remember that Nissan REQUIRES at least an oil /filter change every 180 days to maintain the warranty...................store receipts for parts or oil are not legally satisfactory to prove it was actually done on time.A business must change oil and filter with bill showing details: date, vin, mileage what was replaced brand and grade etc and signed by someone traceable.Self changing between these LEGAL intervals is fine just don't go over by even 1 day or you could find your engine without a warranty

Prove it. Where does Nissan state this requirement? If this were true then you're saying that people can't do their own oil changes since there are no bills from an oil change shop?

That would be the easiest way for them to get out of providing warranty coverage if it was indeed true... however, that would also prove to be costly in a class action deceptive trade practice law suit...

I hope you were kidding on that one...

Wow, are you are class action lawyer?

Actually, pretty much every automobile manufacturer requires you to prove you maintained the vehicle in accordance with the manufacturer's maintenance schedule to keep your warranty in effect.

Do you really expect them to give you a new engine if yours blows up at 30,000 miles if you can't even prove you changed the oil?

For years and years, no manufacturer has ever warranted owner neglect.

I don't know why receipts for the parts, as well as your testimony that you changed the oil/filter on the manufacturer's schedule wouldn't suffice... Granted you need to prove to them that you have the training to do it correctly, and that you in fact did replace them, but I cannot see them requiring you to use a commercial oil change establishment.

If that was the case, why sell oil/oil filters? Those parts would be available to the likes of dealerships, Meineke, JiffyLube, etc... at a much reduced wholesale cost... and not to the consumer.

And no.. I'm not a class action attorney. If I was, I'd be able to shine $hit and make that into a goldmine...
