First Gear Q!

I start moving the car in first gear and shift to second, when i try to shift back to first it wont shift back unless it is at a certain speed (very slow) or the car has to be stopped to put it into first gear again... i think that this may be just normal a friend thinks otherwise.... any ideas guys...

mine is the same way. i have been told there is no syncro for 1st so maybe that could be it and also some car have something in the trans that will lock you out of a gear after a certain speed for safety issues. my eclipse had that you go over certain speed and you cant shift in to some gears. i remember hearing about the celica when i first came out that ppl would down shift from 6 and try to hit 5 when they actually got 3 and blow the motor

thanks for the info. I was thinking the same thing just was not sure about it... i'll be looking further into it see if i can find out exactly what it is

I have the same issue in the 1982 datsun 210.2nd should serve you just find for cursing around any how, why down shift?

Yeah i also was reading that there is no synchros in 1st or reverse on the 240sx:Werd if thats what you drive.Also theres no reason to really shift into 1st unless your going really slow like you said, or at a complete stop.

just rev-match and you should be good to go! if indeed there's no synchros, double-clutching may help, too.

like others mentioned, 2nd is usually fine for normal driving, tho i know dropping to 1st is sometimes necessary when you want to stay in the optimum power band (not bog the engine)...1st gear corners, traffic situations, etc.

The KA transmission has 1st/2nd and 3rd/4th gear synchronizer assemblies. If you can't shift back down to 1st while moving, then the 1st/2nd synchronizer assembly is worn.
